one way valve bags

I bought some one way valve storage bags with my green beans from this site the other day.
They are definitely sturdy and fancy looking items. So do the valves in theses bags have
a use by date. As in do the those valves stop working after a certain amount of time.

Hi Eric,

Well.. the valves probably get less effective over time, but there are some other factors to consider.
They are really designed for single use and not for multiple use.
They work best when the bag itself has been heat sealed (also called impulse sealed).

Having said that, I personally re-use them numerous times, but I do not heat seal them.
I also line the bag with a small freezer bag for each use and throw that part away when I use the beans. This keeps the oils from the roasted beans from getting on the inside of the actual bag, otherwise you would need to clean the inside of the bag on a regular basis or you will get some 'interesting' flavours coming through.

I have never been asked and have no idea about their use-by date!
Bag valves are fairly simple devices but will have a finite life, much shorter if you put ground coffee in them.

Let me know how long they last!

My brother and I were both given a "Friis Coffee Vault" as a gift some time back. It is basically a tin with a clip like a mason jar and a one-way valve in the lid.
It came with spare valves and instructions to replace on a regular basis (thus meaning you had to buy more 'spares' from them down the track).

I use the tin in the same fashion I use the bags - line it with a freezer bag etc.
It holds around 500g and I basically swap my brother a full one for an empty every week or 2.
They use exactly the same valve as the bags and I have never replaced a valve in the tins yet. So I'd say they last a while.

No use by date that I'm aware of.
I reuse the bags until the zip lock starts to not seal properly which gives you plenty of uses.
Can also wash them in warm soapy water or wipe the inside with a damp cloth to freshen them up.

I do use the freezerbags too. And I do have one of those coffee vaults as you said.
They say replace the valve every 2 months. That is the other reason why I started to wonder.
Do they just want to sell you more valves.Anyway I might just buy a few new bags every 2 months or
so when I get more green beans.45 cents per bag is not going to break the bank.Not even mine☺

Nice idea. I reuse mine but have to use hot water and detergent and sometimes Spray-n-wipe to remove the coffee oil. Now I'll try the freezer bag liner technology :-)
