Portafilter Funnel

Hi all,

Since using my Macap M4D been utilizing the old trimmed down yogurt container to act as a portafilter funnel. This works great but interested to know what other more permanent measures CS'ers are using.

Been eyeing off my stainless steel 3/4 cup measuring cup and think that would be awesome, slightly conical in design would do the job fantastically and certainly have the means to trim it down. But before sacrificing the measuring cup, curious to know what other people are using and or what is already available premade.

I've been using the Orphan Espresso dosing funnel for a few years now, with Compak K3, Macap M2M and now M4D. Does its job simply and well. No mess (well no mess at the grinding stage ). Seems pricey (about $30 US landed) given what it is but should last 50 years.

One consideration with the M4D is that, if you do use the OE dosing funnel, you need to flick the dosing button (once, twice) with your finger, rather than the portafilter as the dosing funnel stops the basket from getting sufficiently close to the button.

Could it be the design of the PF as well? I'm assuming different PF's would have slightly different dimensions if that makes sense

OE dosing funnels are Australia bound.... I'd think they should be available in a month or so.

Awesome, the OE dosing funnel seems to be the business. More reasonably priced than the Coffee Catcher. Another month or so with the trimmed down yogurt will be fine till OE dosing funnels come available.

Yeh, quite possibly. I use a naked portafilter and with the base of that on the 'prongs' if I push the portafilter forward with dosing funnel on top I find that the button will push the funnel upwards. It's no difficulty to flick the button with the back of my index finger, however.

I've been using the OE ipanema, works very well with a Mazzer SJ-E.

I'm a keen fan of the funnels from Tidaka in Germany. The internal diameter matches that of the filter basket so that one can start the tamp whilst the funnel is still on.

If you are handy with tools, you could cut the bottom out of an aluminium picnic beaker or pudding mould. I use an anodised aluminium beaker for my 58mm baskets and a SS "dariole" mould for the 51mm Pavoni baskets.

The moulds come in several different sizes, and the kitchen supply shop where I got mine had some ally and some SS.

I also have a macap m4d and I use a coffee catcha. It sits on top of the basket rather than in it which has advantages over a funnell. I did a review (last post) on this site http://coffeesnobs.com.au/brewing-eq...ee-catcha.html. Its not cheap, certainly not as cheap as a yoghurt container. A waste of money? Probably but I wouldn't do without it now.

I have a mazzer mini Doser and use an old E61 shower screen and ground of the screen and glued it on
that fits the porter filter ��mo mess

Roughly worked out for my application, having 2 coffees a day would take about 250 days @ 2g wastage each shot (generous) for the coffee catcher to pay its self off. I wouldn't scrap either with measured dose. That's considering not using the trimmed yogurt container.

Do enjoy the idea of the coffee catcher as it sits on rather than in the PF. On occasion have found the yogurt container can still have very minor spillage (mostly first thing in the morning when I am half asleep and relying on autopilot). Interesting decision ahead

I have one of the wifes cookie cutters that sits inside the Pf which seems to do the job. Not perfect as it sits against the bottom of the basket but allows for wdt with minimal mess

Kenny, I originally had an OE funnel before the coffee catcha and sold it using this site because I found the catcha suited me better. Having it sit on top makes it fast to put on and take off. I don't have any waste. My routine is not slowed down at all in fact I think its quicker because I don't have to concentrate positioning the basket when dosing to catch all grinds. Sitting firmly on top also means you can tamp with the catcha still in place. Even less mess as you're not needing to wipe the top of the basket and lugs before inserting the group handle into the group head. I still mainly remove the catcha before tamping but there is an option not too. I forgot to mention that the red button on the M4D is still easily accessible (pushable) with the catcha.
