  • Coffee in the USA

Over the past 26 years I have travelled to the US some 7 times and now just returned from 2 weeks in Los Angeles. In the past I've found their drip filter coffee to be pretty ordinary but on this trip was pleasantly surprised. Almost all the filter coffee I had was very drinkable, to the point of saying some of the best I recon I've had. One of the things I noticed was almost all the coffee was served from thermal storage pots thus preventing that coffee cooking on the hot plate probably helped.
On the other hand I tried cappuccino a couple of times and it was bloody terrible. Milk was heated to pretty much boiling and just not nice, so stuck to filter coffee was a safer bet.

Being a lover of this America type filter coffee. I have tried many filter machines. Like you mentioned its comes down to the coffee being filtered into a thermos appose to a hotplate as the coffee stews the min it hits the glass caraf. It them comes down to some descent beans ground to the right grind.

Another thing I failed to mentioned was along with the thermal style carafes and storage pots that the coffee was brewed into, many places I visited also offered bold and standard strength brews along with de-cafe varieties.

Haven't been to America in about 2 years, Heading to San Antonio in Late feb next year will be looking forward to trying some coffee and seeing if its improved to what I know it was like. Its hard to complain though when you pay a small amount for a bottomless cup of brewed coffee. I must agree when I went last any milk based coffee did live up to the coffee we have here. Im always however open to see improvement and when i do im happy to acknowledge it.

          Cheers,

          Chris

I must of been unlucky with the few (milk based coffee) I tried so I thought best to stick to what they seem to do best and generally was happy with what I drank.
Actually I remember one place we visited about 6 years ago, that used to have a espresso machine and drip filters had removed the espresso machine this time we visited.
I guess when you don't use it you remove it....
