Too much? Probably. Care factor? Zero at the moment. This intake is required at the moment while my wife and I get the new business off the ground.
Welcome to CS, interesting first post. I can definitely understand the draw of a caffeine fix in your situation. I haven't done those sort of hours for a few years, but shift work is a bit tougher even with shorter hours so I often find myself tempted to have 'just one more' coffee when I'm a bit tired after a 3am start or something. And I'm doing a fair bit of O/T at the moment which adds to it all.
So I won't preach reduction or anything to you, but I will tell you that in my situation I was able to help reduce tiredness with a couple of simple things and they could be worth a try for you too cause the caffeine merry-go-round is a viscous circle really. So things to reduce other than the caffeine are added sugars and confectionery, and other carbohydrates such as bread and pasta (but not too much). Things to increase are water (most important, drink as much as possible), fruit (especially apples as they can do more for alertness than a cup of coffee), and sleep. Sleep is the hardest, I still struggle with getting enough. Power naps are good and everyone could do with one or two 15min naps a day, but they don't replace a good nights sleep of 7-8hrs.
I really hope that came across helpful and not preachy as I hate being lectured to. But when I've been able to improve my own health in some simple ways I feel almost obliged to share.

      LeroyC,

No preaching I notice. A very informative post which gives a good outlook on living well and being comfortable enjoying coffee.

I may be kidding myself, but I do not call drinking my French Press coffee as "shots". Might be mind set but a shot for me is that pulled shot with crema in that small cup to be partaken with delight!

Health issues restrict me to very few "shots" these days. Back in the day, I used drink between 10-12 espressos....and be a jitterbug!
I reckon what you wrote,Leroy is excellent. We can all learn how to take our coffee and enjoy.

Thanks for your kind words GBG, but I fear from the resounding silence that I was in fact a bit preachy and I've killed the conversation. In fact I made a graph of what I've done to the thread.

So apologies everyone, let's get this thread back on topic.

Hey. I second GBG. I enjoyed hearing about your experience and find it really relevant to a discussion around coffee consumption.

GBG: Would telling us how many grams approx. you put into your French press help in getting things back in the ball park?? Also - what made you reduce from the crazy amount of 10-12 shots you were enjoying??

Also - yet to hear from any baristas. Or none have disclosed?

Nope, judging from what generally happens on threads when someone brings up something scientific, i.e. degenerating into personal attacks, argumentation and boasting, i think there's no replies probably because you covered the topic, were thorough and accurate and nobody can or is willing to insert their opinion.

Also, that graph is an accurate representation of my level of effort this week hehe.

Good news on my shot consumption from a 'moderate' viewpoint: zero.

              (I sold my machine)

However, I did make my missus and meself a 1lt press and I put 12g per 250ml (id est 48g total) and let it do its complicated, sprezzatura press-method thing (which involves forgetting about the whole operation and walking off).

Anyway, the brew was very nice (IEH A City+ roasted 7 days' ago). And potent! Woo! I was gritting my teeth.

LeroyC never fear, not preachy at all!! I've just finished 16.5 hours today stacked on top of a full week of this, and now is the first time I've logged onto CS since I posted. I've pulled myself back a bit this week finally as my body has settled into the hours I'm currently working, (its only taken 4 months) so I'm down on my consumption. Not easy when the first 3 hours of my day are in front of an Expobar serving people their morning nectar from 6am, but I persevere. And yes, water and fruit play a bit part in my diet, not due to coffee, mainly due to standing over fryers and a grill plate all day, cooking fish and burgers.

Correct on the sleep too. The main problem I have is finishing around 9pm at night, I'm unable to "switch off"until around midnight, and the circle starts again at 5.20am when I go again.

                5.20am = Can't Brain = Need Coffee

                Cheers guys

That's a big workload dude, hope all the hard work is starting to pay dividends.

'Can't brain = need coffee'!!!!!!!! LOL! Yep. I reckon a few people could relate to this.

I've been back on the roster at the roastery and have been trying not to count how many shots I drink. Mainly, it's because I'm constantly just sipping on different things and it's impossible to really keep track! But I'd say easily 4-5 a day when I'm working.
