Bean bandit bails on 30-cup coffee bill

A man has tested a South African coffee shops "bottomless" offer to the limit by drinking about 30 cups, then leaving without paying his 6.50 rand ($1.10) bill.

Manager Joanne Campbell of Herberts Coffee Shop in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth said the man, a regular customer, had spent hours Monday enjoying its special offer, according to the Herald newspaper in Eastern Cape province.

"He must have had almost 30 cups of coffee and when it became time for him to pay ... he just made for the door and ran like hell," she said.

Ms Campbell alerted guards, who chased and tackled the man a few blocks away.

"I have a few policemen friends who also came to help, but the petrified man said he had only wanted to jog home to fetch some money," she said.

The man was taken to his home where he paid the outstanding amount and apologised.
