Easy fix. Their sparky pulled out the two PPs connected a wire between earth and neutral on each one, put it all back together and bingo the boiler fills.

San Marino 2 Group boiler not filling when connected to generator

It sounded like an earth issue as that's how the auto-fill circuit works to fill the boiler. Please let us know how you go so we can add this knowledge to our t/s skills in the future.

Thanks for your replies Mal & Sprezzatura.
I've been on the phone to the electrician at Dunlite who thinks the issue may be the way the genny is earthed is different to how mains power is earthed? He thinks by making a connection at the back of the power point on the genny between the earth and neutral pins that it should solve the problem. I'm heading up to Dunlite with the San Marino and genny tomorrow.
Cheers

Yes mate, anything's possible until that potential issue is put to bed...

It certainly sounds like a waveform problem with the auto fill circuit issue. It's low voltage. I wonder if the noise might affect the low voltage to the flow meters? Erratic volumes?

G'day Rowan...
It might be worth your while to request that the output of the generator be checked on a Scope (Oscilloscope) to ensure that there is nothing untoward going on, with the output waveform. The manufacturer's blurb states that the output is "Pure Sine Wave" but it wouldn't hurt to verify that. Where electronic hardware is concerned, any "noise" in the waveform can cause unexpected results...

It's possible the boiler fill solenoid coil is failing. Why it won't do this on mains is odd unless there's an issue we don't know about. If the fill probe isn't signalling no earth when the boiler water level drops below the probe tip there's a problem with the auto-fill circuit when on generator.Originally posted by thegordon View PostI've just bought a Dunlite 7KVA inverter generator to run my old reliable 2 group San Marino. I gave it a test run before taking the setup into the field and the boiler would not fill. Everything else was working - pump, heating element, grinder etc. When I disconnected the genny and plugged into mains power the boiler called for water straight away? The genny specs are - 240 volts, current - 27.1A, frequency - 50Hz, max power 7.0KVA, rated power - 6.5KVA.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
