  • Tamper question

    Hello

I hope this is the correct forum for this question.

This is possibly a silly question but I was wondering if a 54.4mm tamper would be a good fit for a 55mm basket ?

My instinct tells me yes but thought no harm in asking.. Am I also correct in guessing that the tamper will always be slightly smaller than the basket it is going into or does it not work this way.

Reason I ask is that the tamper I am looking at does not have a 55mm option only the above mentioned 54.4mm.

Your help and thoughts are always welcome and appreciated.

    Cheers

    Alastair

    G'Day Alastair,

54.4 will be pretty darned close, 55 mm tamper in a 55 mm basket may not fit, if it did would be very tight and prone to jamming.

"Am I also correct in guessing that the tamper will always be slightly smaller than the basket it is going into" yes.

Cheers mate... and I am sure you meant a 54.4 into a 55 not the 58.4 into a 58 - that really would be a close fit

You always want enough clearance so that a couple of grinds between the side of the tamper and basket walls won't make it get stuck. Whether this is achieved through a non-straight side of tamper design (ala PergTamp) or a regular tamper that is a bit smaller than the basket doesn't really matter. You don't want the tamper to be too much smaller than the basket or you might get channeling.
The trick is to go as close to the edges as possible without the tamper getting stuck. 54.4mm sounds about right, but I wouldn't go any bigger! Maybe even smaller if you use oily beans etc that'll stick.

A trap that is easy to fall in to though, is, where are you measuring the ID of the Filter basket?

Given that 'most' baskets' walls are slightly tapered, you really need to measure the ID at the distance from the lip of the basket, that the tamped coffee puck will be. Typically, this will be in the range of 6-8mm from the top, such that sufficient clearance remains between the tamped puck and the bottom of the Group Shower-screen.

            Mal.

Hi Alistair. Sounds like you will have a great gold mining combo! Enjoy.

Yep - have seen a couple of office setups where the tamper bottomed out well before it achieved a proper tamp. Scary thing is, they were used daily by dozens of people, and one was in a company involved in speciality coffee! 😲
