I made my funnel out of clear aluminium. It probably looks much the same as yours but is much more hi tech.

I made a funnel out of a platic cup, bought a stack for a dollar at Kmart and cut the bottom out...no more mess and easy to redistribute coffee by giving it all a shake
Also a tall knock box with a wide mouth is handy...if only there were instructions on how to make one on this forum...hmmmmm

Using a normal PF on a friends machine I couldn't believe all the drips etc, forgot all about it from years ago.

Or use a towel under the PF when moving from group to knock box to grinder etc?

You can see how a funnel will help by making a makeshift one out of a yogurt or similar container.

I haven't found stray grinds to stain, drips can be stubborn though.

Really good ideas regarding funnel and naked portafilter! I'll check them out

I got an orphan espresso portafilter funnel from talk coffee, worth every cent. Maybe check if any current sponsors sell it

Mostly from dosing into the portafilter. I'm using a doser and several times it acts a little erratically. Might be worthwhile getting a funnel extension?

It has been treated and most of the time I'm able to buff out most stains anyway (even after a few days) with a spray bottle with vinegar and water. I guess it's as easy as try to be as careful as possible and maintain every few days! Good tip about the handheld. Thank for the recommendations!

A tidy grinder, don't overdose the basket, and use an extra wide 150- 200mm knock box.

Similar routine as above, I have white laminex counter top, I always have a moist Chux at hand to wipe up any spills etc, I use a small hand vacuum to clean up around the grinders and knockbox then wipe counter with Chux.
Spic and Span in my eyes but not my wife's!!!!!!!

Keeping your espresso work area clean?

A combination of fine grinds and a white stone benchtop = a pretty messy work area. My wife is always on my case about the mess i'm making and she is worried i will end up staining the benchtop.

I'm wondering if you guys have any specific things you use to put under your machine + grinder setup to 'control' the spread of grinds/dripping water etc.

I thought this roll liner from spotlight would be an ok idea but there might be a better, more creative solution that might ever add to the work area.
