  • How espresso nearly destroyed a family

Bumped into this story on the interwebs last night and found it amusing as it reflects some of my family's dynamics perfectly. It reminds me of some of my Gumtree pursuits, though I haven't (yet) gone as far as going for a 3 hour drive to pick something up.

The espresso machine at my family home hisses in the corner. It is like a high culture meth lab sizzling on 220-volt power with its own dedicated water supply and drain.

It all started when one morning my wife insisted our espresso cappuccino machine of about six years had finally given up the froth.

But my wife made a tactical error when without much thought as she headed out the door said, “If you find yourself on one of your eBay searches — get us a good cappuccino maker.”

Can anyone else relate? Better yet, do you have any coffee-related stories that you would like to share?

Hmmm. I did do an 8hr return trip last year to look at a coffee machine that I didn't end up buying......

It's dedication (a sickness) to be sure [emoji3]

I may have recently been guilty of a 5.5 hour trip each way to get a commercial coffee machine.

Thankfully family lived in the general area I was going to and could put me up for the night. Ahem, I mean, I could stop in to visit them [emoji3]

We did a round trip to Canberra (from Syd) over Easter to buy a Silvia. Made the epic mistake of doing the trip on Good Friday. The traffic was atrocious, so it took us 8 hours instead of ~5. The kicker was the machine wasn't for us, but I was buying it for a friend! Was a painful day to be sure.

            G'day Java

Unfortunately your epic journey has dozens of invalid links (i.e. most photos after the first few). As the super "super moderator" of CS would you mind fixing them? I did a couple of similar US trips and would like to get my memory refreshed. I will try again after a few days to see if the links work.

Also, the three phase motor thing - I had a batch of problems in Colorado US because my (very) modded Oz 240V Tilbrook 6000 MOSFET power amps would not play properly without requiring another power station handy. And that was only two of the five of them... I feel your pain - even if belatedly (at least I assume you eventually sorted the motor).

Hhhmm....I'll take a look at the links. They must have gotten messed up during an upgrade.

The motor issue was resolved by using a microdrive. Has worked flawlessly now for 8 years.

I knew you would nail it somehow or die trying... well done.

BTW, my longest 90's Oz "excuse trip" was just over 7,500Kms (just over 4,500 miles) to check out the Turner paintings in Melbourne, the Rodin Statues just purchased by Adelaide Art Gallery and the Kandinsky exhibition in Sydney. Add a Brisbane client (plus an Adelaide and Sydney one) to pay for the motorcycle trip... worth every Km, especially as I had time to check out the Eyre peninsula on the way over. My secretary booked the three client appointments with a straight face and then asked me later what the hell I was really doing.

I only got some of the links fixed before my internet died and I then was gone for the holiday weekend here. I should have the rest fixed over the next 24 hours or so.

It's been one problem after another but at last all is well. Onto the other thread tomorrow!
