they were finding live bugs in their beans
That certainly needs to be looked at and as I said, please get them to seal the remaining beans in plastic and contact DAWR.
Of course, it could also be something local, maggots, moth larvae, weevils or something else that has laid eggs since the beans arrived but I wouldn’t be happy until you got someone at AQIS to have a look.

Who really want's to go down in history and the dude that thought a couple of pair of rabbits was harmless fun?
In 12 years at CoffeeSnobs we have only had one issue like this and after quarantine and inspection by AQIS officers over a few week period it was determined the live insects were larvae local to QLD and had laid eggs in their green beans while in the customers storage and were not sourced from the Snobbery.
I think we are pretty lucky in Victoria, too damn cold this time of year for insects and thankfully no local insects or vermin will "eat" green beans.
