  • Electronic Total Dissolved solids (TDS) meter Vs water hardness test strips

    Hi all,
With all the talk of water quality, scale and descaling, what would be the best and easier way to repeatedly test the total dissolved solids in your water?

Looks like you can get an electronic meter from around $10. I’m sure they are not the most accurate, but give you a ballpark figure.

Another method is through disposable test strips. These are around $20+ for around 50. Some retailers have them from 5-10 for $10.

    Thoughts?

    G'day mate...

You'll have to remove those NON-Site Sponsor links mate, as per the Site Rules which I trust you have familiarised yourself....

Basically, knowing the TDS of your water supply is only half the story, specifically you need to to know Total Hardness and the pH too. Talk to one of our trusted Site Sponsors or contact Bombora Coffee and Water Supplies for technical advice.

If you really want to get "hands-on" with all of this, you will have to invest in at least semi-pro instruments for these key measurements, otherwise the exercise will be both meaningless and a waste of time.

    Mal.

I've used reagent-based measurement kits from the local aquarium shop.

        Hi Dimal,
My Bad, didn’t realise I could not post links to products from sellers that do not sponsor this site. I better get familiar with the site rules
Just trying to show examples so others understand what I’m talking about.
Problem is that I can’t seem to edit or even post picks on this forum.
        Admins,
If the admins could remove the links it would be appreciated.

I did 3. Used the espresso machine manufacturers strips and found them mostly useless. Then got a pool cleaning supply shop to run the numbers for $10 on a water sample and got a useful set of numbers. Then had a professional lab run the same numbers and they were consistent with the pool cleaner supply shop numbers so going forward will just use the pool cleaner store as needed
