How long after planting do I see coffee sprouts?

Be aware that as far as I know, coffee imported into Australia is treated to prevent germination due to bio-security risks, so there is a good chance it will NOT germinate unless grown in Oz. Although having said that it has been known to happen.Originally posted by 338 View PostJust wondering how long after putting green beans in the ground you see sprouts?
Andy would have a more definite answer on this no doubt though.

I have two plants growing in suburban Melb., not in a green house, but outside in a relatively sheltered area.Originally posted by coffe4me2I want to try this out.
Can you grow coffee in cold Melbourne without a greenhouse? Has anyone tried that?
They are doing OK, look health, but very slow growing.
The oldest is about 6 years old, has probably almost reached 1m high, and had it's first real crop last year.
By crop I mean about 30 beans.

Code Black have a couple outside their Brunswick roastery/cafe; they're brought inside overnight but it probably gets pretty cold in there in winter.Originally posted by coffe4me2I want to try this out.

I germinated mine by soaking overnight and then putting them between two pieces of damp paper towel, before planting as seedlings. It took a few weeks from memory. First thing you'll see is the beans poking out (they remain on the seedling for quite a while) - like this.

RRood, thank you very much and yes it does. I was roasting today and had an accident where I spilled about 100 grams of green beans onto pavers. Like an idiot I swept these onto the lawn, forgetting they may well germinate! It is feezing here in Sydney at the moment, will ensure I mow the lawn a few times in the next couple of months and hopefully the catcher will suck them up and all good. Thank you

In a sub-tropical environment, normally no less than 2 months. If it's cooler, could be up to 3 months. They are very slow germinators. Hope this helps
