Standard E61 Group Hight V Raised E61 Group Height Reasoning ?
Hi snobs, can someone please explain why there is a difference in group hight and the difference in function ,if any?
Thanks
I'm guessing you're talking about the clearance between the group head and the drip tray grill? If so some manufacturers have models that maximize this distance to give you more flexibility around what size cup you can put under it. A higher group head means you can extract directly into the vessel you want to use, no matter its size. So a latte glass or a travel cup won't be a problem. It also means you can put a cup on a scale underneath. Many machines don't allow for this and you need to extract into a shot glass or demi cup then pour into your larger cup. Not a huge deal, just an extra step in the process that many people want to avoid.
Having been looking for a new machine for sometime, I have always loved the Look ans style of the Alex duetto. After looking at many machines i kept coming back to this particular one. The only reason i didnt buy it though was the fact distance between the group head and the drip tray was pretty tight. Sure you can get by and it would have suited me, however my partner, i know she wouldn't have been happy with it.
Its not yet out but they are bringing out a new version late this year, Im happy to say i have put a deposit down on one with Antony from Casa Espresso.
Thanks LeroyC, yep sorry...i did mean the clearance between the group head and the drip tray grill.
coffeechriss I also am trying to choose between 2 machines , Wega Mini Nova Classic and Mini Nova V. But the confusion was the Nova V is available with the standard E61 group head clearance of 82mm and also with a clearance of 122mm and didn't know the difference in function.
CC...as a matter of interest and comparison i just had a look at the clearance of a few Alex Duetto machines and it only gave the distance from the drip tray to the bottom of the Porta Filter spout which was 50mm,.. do you know the clearance distance from drip tray to group head on the machine you have put a deposit on?
Thanks guys for your reply's, just another box ticked in the selection/elimination of a new machine.
Off the Top of my head I dont know the distance, However im sure i can find out... Thats said i know it will be more inline with what I currently have which is the Expobar minore in terms of distance. Like mentioned it doesn't bother me and to be honest i would prefer the smaller distance as i drink mainly espressos rather than milk based drinks. I believe they were selling with or could get for a fair price a bottomless group handle with the previous Alex. For those who liked those Alex machine and really wanted one with the ability to put a larger cup underneath could turn the drip tray grill upside down creating more room between the head and the tray. This is just an opinion, but if you are going to spend that much on a machine and have to do that, I would maybe look at something else with better clearance.
I believe from what I have been told, they machine has not changed much (which im happy for) The distance is made up by a now more streamlined and smaller capacity drip tray. This maybe a issues to some, however I will be looking to plumb it in at some time.
I haven't looked at the Wega Mini Nova Classic and the V but like you i know the issue with trying to find a machine suitable for needs.
It's about how long the coffee is in free fall before it hits the cup.
When I got seriously interested in learning about the extracting, I converted one group handle to bottomless and that increased the distance by (hang on while I measure...) 40 mm. You can get about 25 mm extra by just unscrewing the divider.

The clearance on the NEW Duetto is 150mm, up 25mm from the old model.
