    Simply because thermoblock machines are usually cheap with thermoblocks that arent up to the task of adequately heating the water. These cheapies give all thermoblock heaters a bad name.

    However, in principle, thermoblocks should be able to either match or better boilers if they are implemented properly. The latest Sunbeam EM6910 has a reasonably high quality thermoblock and is getting closer to commercial quality performance. However, there is still some way to go with this design. Thermoblocks are often used to perform precision heating for industrial and laboratory tasks, so there is no doubt they are capable if implemented correctly. However, expect the price to jump sharply past the commercially viable pricepoint.
