Been over there annually over the past 10 years for a month or so at a time visiting our daughter and her family in MD, initially eating out was an experience we quite enjoyed, didn't take long for the shine to wear off, now we cook at home most of the time, have to say the quality, abundance and price of food in supermarkets is excellent.
Yes! when we eat out we do tip if the service warrants it, min 15% max 20%, a lot of places in the US now automatically add the tip (gratuity) to the bill, it pays to check, although have been known to chuck a cent on the table when the service was less than stellar.
Yes, I fully understand the remuneration system is totally different in the US and appreciate that the service staff depend on tips to make ends meet, however, having experienced restaurant dining in both countries I much prefer the Aussie system, yes, we still tip in Australia if the service is above average.
Back to Starbucks, this is the type of thing you can experience there if your so inclined, makes me shudder thinking about it, I think they serve coffee as well.
