  • New snob, 800es, BCG600SIL and okay coffee..

    Hello coffeesnobs!

I have been playing around brewing for a fairly short amount of time after the nespresso pods weren't satisfying my morning coffee needs.
I've played around with a French press and percolator, getting reasonable results by my standards but just not getting that flavour out of the coffee I'm seeking.
Now I'm no coffee snob but I do have standards. I already had a Breville dose control pro which seems to do a reasonable job. On the the weekend I reluctantly bought a second hand Breville 800es for $80. I had extremely low expectations after reading up a bit about the machine but figured I could tinker with it for a few weeks, get frustrated and throw it away.
To my surprise it actually pumps out an okay coffee by my standards, it's not quite where I want it but it's okay.

I am wondering if it's worthwhile sourcing an unpressurized basket and thinking with that or am opening a can of worms?
I'm hesitant to modify the pressurised basket just incase I want to move back it.

I am also curious about timing/measuring my shots. My machine doesn't have a time so I'm pretty much running it till it the colour looks like it's becoming lighter. (I am yet to time this but it seems to be a lot less that the 30seconds that I have heard about a bit)

Any tips, advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks folks.

I had a 800es for a first machine and it was ok at that time.
I ordered a unpressurised basket from ebay and went from there.
I have a thread on here somewhere with a video of my shots with a bit of commentary below that.
    Btw. Welcome!
    Cheers

Thanks for the reply, I actually found this thread in my searching and just finished reading through it this evening.
Lots of info to take in. I think I'll start by ordering an unpressurized basket, a decent tamper to suit and a shot glass to measure into.

Good idea TMaKK and recommend a set scale that measure in 0.1 grams too. Weigh your grinds before put in basket and weight the shot as pouring so can maintain consistency.
Weight in basket depends on basket and machine, weight of shot depends on your taste but maybe start at 1:2 ratio so say 16g in go for 32g out in 25-30 sections. Always keep in mind that the number are a guide and the important thing is does it taste good to you. If you prefer say a 1:3 ratio in 25 secions but Barry next door like 1:1.5 in 33secs neither of you are wrong, in fact I’d say your both right as you found what you like

look up the 5 cent test to ensure your dose is the right height for your new basket and machine.

          happy caffeine!

The unpressurised basket is a good move considering you have a decent grinder.

Skip the shot glass and go straight to precision scales, eBay cheapies work well.

Definately need scales, unpressurised basket and a clear glass is nice to watch the brew.
Once the pump starts to cycle on and off during a brew, you will be getting closer.
