  • Need some advice for coffee cart(Sydney)

I've pretty much completed building my coffee cart; I've been finding all the parts separately and now have a Rancillio machine setup with a grinder, generator etc. I've called some councils throughout the process and from what I understand I need to get an approval for operating in an area, and a second approval for a specific location if it's council land. I'll be moving the cart with my trailer and ute. I was wondering if anyone here has been through this process before and how they found their locations, or if they had any advice. I'm coming from years of working in hospitality and I'm keen to get started.

Hi erencoffee, I can offer some advice from the Council perspective - I've worked as a traffic engineer for a number of Councils in NSW and my only involvement has been where mobile coffee operations have set up at completely inappropriate sites. For example, not far from the shoulder next to a high-speed road with a poor history of road crashes. I have no doubt that such operators are for the most part well-intentioned, however you've then got to factor in the the ability of road users to be utter morons, e.g. performing U-turns on blind corners, parking on the other side of the road and running in-between traffic etc.

Obviously there is a duty of care if someone is setting up some kind of operation that attracts people. I can totally appreciate the red-tape factor which can be pretty overwhelming, so I just hope that the Council(s) you deal with are helpful and point you in the right direction across the various considerations. Good luck, as a well-located coffee operation is a good thing in my books!
