Havent tried the salty liquorice and have to say the idea of it makes me wince. I think I go stuck on the sweet appreciation bit and never progressed far beyond it.

Wine was usually served with meals at our table, and for me, at around the age of 4 or 5, was diluted with water. I never turned into a drunk and these days, might have a glass or two a week. Everything in moderation I think is good. You just know that tastes will change and those that eat everything now, may only eat vegemite sandwiches later, and the reverse applies too.

Was always into sour, bitter, salty flavours. Bring on the gherkins, lemon wedges, coffee and dutch liquorice (double salted of course).
Julsajet, Im right there with you. Dutch licorice is beautiful, and the saltier the better for me. But these days it just doesnt seem as salty as 20 years ago. Maybe its just my matured taste buds, I dont know, but it doesnt give me the same face-changing reaction.

In any case, I despair at my 9 1/2 month olds dislike of most food except mashed banana and cereal and vanilla custard. I know shes only little but some of our friends kids were into all sorts of stuff by that age. I guess you cant underestimate the impact of personality on all sorts of things.

Its just that I had these dreams of a really adventurous eater of a baby who would try everything I lovingly cooked for her... sigh...
Meg, I know that struggle! The same child who now has such gourmet tastes lived on weetbix and pumpkin soup mixed with rice cereal for months! She only got adventurous once she was in control and could feed herself... so theres still hope!

To go on a slight tangent: In a culture where kids are bombarded with fast-food advertising, I think Id much rather take them to cafes and feed them tasty, healthy food. Yes, its more expensive, but I think its worth it. Doing coffee is a good, social hobby. Theres something very civilised about it. Id much rather my little ones learn the importance of converstaion and friendship (and good extraction ), than accept the unhealthy images about food and eating put forth by certain multi-national food companies.
I hear you Michelle! I think understanding the cultural and social context of good food from an early age is much more important than worrying about a bit of caffeine from the odd coffe e or tea. A lot of caffeine with a lot of sugar as in a typical softdrink doesnt really have a place in the scenario above anyway.

Nevermind... the adventurousness will have to be limited to crawling in tight spaces you cant seem to get out of and playing with the stereo to get an amazing reaction from Daddy!

She also likes olives, washed rind cheese, dried figs, crystallised ginger, and 70% dark chocolate.
    Shes got good taste.

I was always a coffee kid. I think it started with mooves then iced coffees - heaven forbid if they gave me one made with coffee topping instead of espresso, yuk, was a coffee snob even then. Ive weaned myself off the sugar and milk over the years - used to have 2 sugars and milk as a kid. If I had that now Id probably spit it out.

Was always into sour, bitter, salty flavours. Bring on the gherkins, lemon wedges, coffee and dutch liquorice (double salted of course). The olives took a little longer to gain my affection. My greek friend and I used to gross each other out - she made me eat olives and I gave her dutch liquorice. Man that was funny. I also used to eat mustard sandwiches.

yeah robusto.. not to mention a whole bunch of other crap, like pres 211 which is apprently so damaging it screws with your DNA (well, research on that theory is being conducted at least) - all softdirnk has 211 in it and its a known carcinagen..
Doesnt coffee actually have some antioxidants too?? so it has good stuff in it.. I avoid giving softdrinks to my kids, and would definately prefer giving them a coffee!!!

I did like all those studies that came out recently saying 2+ per day coffee drinkers have dramatically reduced risks of getting a whole stack of diseases.. LOVE IT! heh heh.. its sort of like, rubbing it in the face of those people who go "errrhh how much coffee do you DRINK!!! youre addicted to coffee!!" .. man thats annoying.. ..... hrm, maybe those people are jelous..

    sigh.. mmmm coffeeeeee :

If you give your kids Cocacola, then that, IMHO is far worse than coffee! Coffee has been linked to Diabetes reduction.. whereas coca cola has been linked to Type 2 Diabetes... End of comparison!
I dont think cocacola and coffee are logical comparisons because of their common ingredient: caffeine.  Its that other ingredient in cocacola which is detrimental to health: SUGAR. Lots of it.

My 2 y.o. has liked the taste of espresso since she was about 12 months   - she would very occasionally be allowed what grandma calls the "fluff" on the coffee Id make for her (grandma that is). People told me she was just doing it for the reaction and that shed grow out of it. However, now, when I make my espresso she will sip the dregs and say "mumm mumm". We cant leave half empty coffee cups around or she will finish them- and none of us ever put sugar in our coffee.

She also likes olives, washed rind cheese, dried figs, crystallised ginger, and 70% dark chocolate.

I sometimes worry a bit about the caffeine, but its not like I sit her down with a double-shot all for herself. Im far less worried about her having the occasional sip of coffee than I would be about her having soft-drink- she doesnt even get juice unless its very watered down.

My 2 year son loves "playing" with the beans... he comes up and says "beans"... and picks one out... doesnt eat it (I wont allow it at his age anyway)..

My 12 1/2 y/\/old Daughter doesnt like coffee.. even a latte is too strong...

Tea has antioxidants, which is a good thing.. so any age over 2 for Tea is ok in my book... in moderation of course...

Once a week drink isnt a concern... its a treat...

    Hmmm,

I would have been about 6 or 7 years old when I had my first taste of "real" coffee at my Dutch Grandmas (Oma) place..... loved it ever since 8-)

My 2 year old son likes the rich brown crema from my espressos. I dip the tip of my finger in it and he has a taste. No funny faces, and when I ask him if he likes it, he says yes, more please! I must be doing something right going by what Lizzi said about "sweet comes before salt comes before sour comes before bitter in the appreciation stakes...".

This happens rarely though. Oh, and no cola/soft drinks for him either! Theres plenty of time for that.

I cant remember how young I was when I first tried coffee.
It would have been greek/turkish though.
    Probably pre-teens.
I was definitely drinking instant by 13 (came in army ration packs - school cadets).

My kids (23 & 26) dont drink it much.
The odd social one out with friends.
My son did enjoy the Vietnamese one I made him the other day.

    Hrm yeah good question..
My mum used to make me decaf iced coffee as a treat, once in a while, when I was less than 10.. I loved it.. By the time I was in middle teens, I enjoyed the odd cup of (usually decaf) instant coffee here and there.. by the time I was 20 it was a daily thing.. and now, 25 and Im obsessed!
As for the kids.. My daughter hates it, shes 4 - I mean I personally wouldnt give her any anyway but shes tasted the froth off my spoon.. my 1 1/2 year old however, chases me down and I have to hide to have a cuppa.. he wants to stick his fingers in and get my spoon and eat all my froth.. and hes always going "mmmm yum yum"..
So I suppose.. I guess Ill just see how my kids go - but personally, Ill try and avoid giving them caffeinated coffee for as long as possible.. I wouldnt want my kids getting those no caffeine head aches if they miss a cup one day! heh heh..

I tried to allow my children to experiment, under supervision.  If they ask for it, and like the taste, and you know it wont harm them, then maybe thats ok?

Youd think after having 4 kids I would have a definitive answer, but I dont.

Be careful though - when one of mine was 3 years old he picked up a glass of cognac and I let him have a sip...big mistake...I was pretty much immediately covered in projectile vomit!
