Parts of the US are quite good. the Bay Area, San Francisco, in particular, has some great coffee shops, as does NYC. I've been to a really good one in Salt Lake City, too - which was quite amusing...
I walk in, after dislocating my shoulder skiing the day before, resulting in a day off (and what do you do when you can't ski? Find good coffee, right?), I look around, and all seems promising, several good machines, good grinders, bags of beans where the dates are indicative of being freshly roasted...
Me:"Can I have a double Macchiato please?"
Barista #1: "Sure - but you know that is a drink that is about this big, right?" *holding up an espresso cup
Me: "yup, that'll be why I ordered it"
Barista#2: "Can't you hear the accent? He's an Aussie, he knows what coffee is!".
Las Vegas still hurts my brain, though. Sunset Coffee is about the best I found at last visit, and they seem to insist on serving Piccolos in 300ml+ cups.

We know that on HERE, Yelta, but a lot of people think they are a fair-dinkum coffee outlet.
Not enough though, apparently.

Starbucks was never really about coffee, more a chain selling drinks laced with sugar and fat, take a look through their menu.

The US has been very slow to embrace quality Espresso coffee but one imagines that it WILL happen, sooner rather than later, led by countries like Australia that have a lot of cultural overlaps and interchange.
In countries where the quality of Espresso is uniformly terrible or at best utterly unpredictable, outfits like Starbucks will thrive until the average standard passes them by (as had already happened in Australia by the time they got here).
I wouldn't think 'home delivery' will make any significant difference to their viability as a company.
On a US Forum I frequent, I see the green shoots of an Espresso revolution but it is clear that brewed coffee is still the standard throughout the country.
In a "coffee thread" on this forum - that's a thread for avid coffee fans, mind you - 7 out of 10 posters still rely on home brewing methods that do NOT involve an Espresso machine.

Starbucks on decline in the US.
Interesting piece on Starbucks in today's Washington Post, seems they've had their day in the sun, not surprising, with the slow introduction to quality coffee in the US I imagine their days are numbered.

"As Starbucks grapples with slowing foot traffic and a glut of competition, it’s hoping to snag new customers by meeting them where they are — literally. The company is introducing a delivery service in seven major U.S. cities through a partnership with Uber Eats, the coffee chain announced Tuesday."
Some of the reader comments make interesting reading.
