    +1

I've seen examples of what people call a god shot and have come to the conclusion that my standards differ significantly from theirs.

I'd define a god shot as an amazing tasting coffee that also looks as good as it tastes, as it exits the group and in the cup.

It should absolutely be necessary to show a video or some images of the extracting and resulting product for others to determine what your level of satisfactory and/or god shot status is.

I'd like to see a thread dedicated to god shot images and video, probably called coffee porn or similar?

Posted this in another thread but could be taken as relevant to your original question.

An "advanced coffee making lecture" video from the Barista Hustle guys - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lPGf1gM9nA

Quite long and starts off slow but I found it interesting nonetheless. Probably some concepts that not all will agree with but the intent of their "research/experiments" is covered in the Q and A at the end of the video."

You know, on reflection, I simply don't use this type of superlative, seems sufficient, if asked, hows the coffee? to comment, OK, pretty good, very good, or if its exceptional, almost as good as I make at home.

Seriously, coffee doesn't come much better than Coretto roasted beans and shots from my Bezzera, almost every coffee I produce is better than 95% of what you pay for out and about.

Am I biased? not in the least.

I, for one, would have no trouble interpreting that as a god/God shot.

I feel you maybe reading into it too much it's only a word. I guess there are 2 ways to think of it myself according to some have been labeled a militant Atheist, feel it's just that a word used commonly in the English language I try not to use it at all, Sometimes it's used just like a F-bomb to describe something that just happened. Of course the other way is for people with certain beliefs to get all upset and offended by it to be honest I don't care if they are offended.

When I was flying model helicopters I remember they have one bolt nicknamed the Jesus bolt you can probably guess it's not good if it breaks mid flight. I believe this term was coined by real pilots many years ago.

Regardless over the course of Human history there have been more than 2000 odd Gods so why not make up one more, it makes no difference it's just a word it only holds power or meaning if you allow it.

Unfortunately "Flying Spaghetti Monster shot" does not have the same simple ring to it. That one I could accept if it must involve deities.

Just spell it with a lower case "g", then the term becomes ecumenical. They only occur when the Coffee Gods are smiling upon one, so the term is entirely appropriate.

Mentioned loads of times by aspirants and experts alike on Usenet from the mid 90s onward when I first started researching coffee online.

"surely an exceptional coffee shot deserves its own unique and descriptive name." I agree, its known as a god shot.

    G'Day Yelta

I realise the longevity of the term - I heard it in "live" in the late 70's, on various (mainly academic IT) bulletin boards in the 80's and in alt.coffee posts in the 90's. I disliked the term then and still haven't changed my mind on that issue.

I agree it needs a term - just not that one (or "Allah shot", or "Brahma shot" etc.). It is a cuppa, not a shrine - says he as he worships at the altar of coffee taste - arguably hypocritical I suppose.

Having said that, as long as I am getting (mostly) stunning shots to enjoy, I really do not care that much what others call it.

Enjoy your cuppa - whatever you call your particular breed of poison.

What about supershot or wondershot? Any suggestions?

    G'day OCD

I reckon nailing an espresso shot to near perfection is one of life's joys. I hesitate to use the term "god shot" as I really do not think it is a good descriptor - and that is totally ignoring any religious connotations.

I spent years in a love / hate (or perhaps a hate / love / hate / hate) relationship with a manual lever Electra. When I was on the top of my game it produced a magic cuppa "almost 100% of the time" (not counting the setup of a new roast).

The hate part: the sheer amount of faffing around needed to coax the SOB to produce its finest was pretty wearisome after a year or so - even more so after the first ten million years... (apologies to Douglas Adams). Also the knowledge that you were really tired and wanted a top drawer shot while knowing damn well that the Miss S / GS3 next to it was your best option at that precise moment in time as the "Eagle E" would bite you severely unless all necessary homage was undertaken in a fully awake state... Then of course the "wonderful feeling" when your current lover brings four or six of her "bestie friends" for a cuppa - all of which have been told to expect the best coffee of their miserable caffeine deprived lives - when the Eagle E can only do two shots in a row before yet another set of extended arcane rituals taking over a galactic eon or two before it will even consider delivering something drinkable to your unworthy self as a third cuppa. Honestly, I haven't missed my Eagle E because those issues completely negated the good points after a while. It got to the stage where I was fantasising about a machine where you can just set it up and then repeat the chosen shot endlessly... and that was probably 20+ years ago.

Yes, we do want a brilliant shot every time - otherwise we may as use the $4 instant that choice reckoned was the best instant - bliss, just throw some near boiling water over a spoon of the brown crystals. How easy is that!

So fellow OCD coffee fiend, I bought a few good espresso grinders and finally (recently - Feb 2019) settled on a Decent DE1. At least after the initial setup for each new roast I can just press "start" and get a shot that equals (probably just surpasses, mainly due to the Eagle E not accepting VST baskets) the Electra and do it as often as I want with no effort until I need to change roasts. Its next test will be a variety of coffees for 40 guests in a month or so - I reckon it can do a max of around 45 coffees an hour (estimate only) so I will also have another machine or two handy "just in case". If it passes that test then I finally have an espresso machine worth holding onto long term (subject to any reliability gremlins). Only taken since 1970.

So I suppose I also "want it all and want it now" just like most (all) other CS'r's.

Enjoy your cuppa - whether it is a $4 instant or something a bit more upmarket - without bringing any unnecessary deities into the equation.
