  • HELP!! extraction channeling issue

    Hi all,

Need some advice to fix channeling issue.

    Machine: Giotto
    Grinder: Compak K3
20g VST basket, in a naked portafilter

So lately, my shots have been getting channeling towards the end of the shot. My tamping technique hasn’t changed and always use fresh beans. The shot starts of nice then halfway/end of the shot, it starts to channel, spitting in all directions. What should I look at first to fix this problem? TIA

    Nelson

Hi Nelson, how long have you been using this exact set up? Has it been fine until recently? How many grams of ground coffee are you dosing into the 20g basket?

Pulled the shower screen out and made sure it doesn’t have build up of muck behind it?

Have you recently changed the beans you usually use or have you tried using a different bean?
When was the last time you gave your grinder a good clean?

Change one thing at a time

              1/ Beans
2/ Grinder Blades...they degrade ever so slowly.
Could Fit with the background info you gave.
3/ Puck being distrubed by hitting shower screen as PF locks in.

Things you could experiment with -
Varying space above puck to allow more (or less) water to saturate the puck to slow (speed up) the pre-infusion.

IIRC - VST state something like 1.5mm above puck for water saturation.

Always use fresh beans from local roaster, i’ve had the grinder for about 5 years and it’s been recently cleaned, the blades seemed ok to me, but maybe need changing.

I'd start by reducing the dose to the exact amount that the VST is rated for (i.e. 20g), which should also eliminate the possibility that the puck is being fractured by contact with shower screen.

I suspect the blades do also need changing, but try the 'easy outs' first.

Yep i’m beginning to think it’s time to replace the blades, cheers.
