Not really a question I just needed to vent to the one place that would get it.
My local place in Canberra CBD makes a good espresso and seems to pay attention to details which I like. But they recently added an EK43 and Otfes spiral drip machine for brewing V60s and I find it ridiculous.
That's ~$10,000 just for the two machines. Let's say they're paying $30/kg for their s/o beans and dosing about 16g. That's around 50c/cup for the coffee.
So they're making around $5/cup before labour and overheads. Ignore those and they still need to sell 2000 V60s just to pay for the grinder and dripper. I'd be surprised if they're doing more than 50 a week.
Does this seem absurd to you snobs? I'm all for getting a good pourover at a cafe but the labour savings from the spiral dripper don't seem at all worth it, and even the dedicated EK43 for pourover seems excessive.
