  • Ads - have the ghoogle bots taken over?

Hi Andy, Javaphile and the other mods. I have noticed this week after the changes to the forum last week that the number of ads has increased, sometimes tenfold compared to before. Just wondering if this was intended or possibly a default setting on the forum software which came with the upgrades? It is much worse on an Android tablet than Windows, but still there on Windows. This is happening logged in or not. The ads are slow to load and slow the whole forum experience down.

An example of the front page, which isn't too bad:

On the Android tablet (running firefox) I had one thread with 11 of these ads in it. I even had one post with 5 ads in the one post! The single post took 3 pages to read! Is this intentional or an accident?

Not passing judgement if a new business model, but such a huge change from before thinking it might be an accident?

Not something I'm seeing but I know why it's happening and it's got nothing to do with the upgrade, just bad timing to make you think we did it!

Google ad sense changed their model a week ago and this is the result. I'm not getting them as bad as you but I noticed we went from "no animation" to annoying videos that auto-play.

Ironically, the upgrade wasn't configured for google ads at all but because we went back to the original version we copped the "new and improved (in their eyes) ads"

I'll have a look at it later today (on roaster now).

I have noticed a few posts with extra spacing before or after the text and ads appearing within the body of the post. Running Chrome on an old tablet with Android 4.4.2 but also happening on my Android 7.7.1 mobile phone. Doesn't seem to be affecting Opera.
          Eg https://coffeesnobs.com.au/roasters/...tml#post662023

update: I just checked those links again and they look normal now so not sure if it's an intermittent problem or Andy trying to fix things.

No rush at all from this end Andy, just when I got five ads in one individual post I figured this couldn't be planned! (the post did have two pics in it). I did think you did it!

Andy here is an example from an Android Tablet, same thread, you can see an ad top and tail of a single post.

No, per post #4 I was on the roaster however it's "later" now and I'm fiddling

Google call it "Auto Ads" and it was released 2 weeks ago and apparently released as opt-out not opt-in. I didn't turn anything on for CoffeeSnobs, the google-monster just took over and did it's own thing.
                https://adsense.googleblog.com/2019/...-auto-ads.html

I've just turned Auto-ads off and it should return to normal in 20min (according to google).

When the new forum software released (early December best guess) we'll revisit the adsense.

Currently 100% of adsense payments go into FairCrack so ignoring a few ads here and there is a small price to pay for something good happening.

I've looked at a few options in the forum code and think I can set "way too many ads" for anyone not logged in and "far fewer ads" for regular CS'rs who are logged in. Might even change that to even less ads shown if you have 100+ posts on the forum... "membership has its privileges eh"

So the punchline is, this grief wasn't me but in the future it might be!

Google thinks you should get your fridge fixed and you should buy your wife 3 handbags.
(or maybe she already did and they'll get delivered soon)

Andy makes total sense for a few more ads when not logged in, especially for a good cause.

Will keep a lookout for the three handbags!
