i have a 22g VST and dose to about 25-26g, output is around 30 grams. I use this as my standard "shot" for espresso, long black, flat whites etc. Tastes good to me.

    Cheers

I'm probably the polar opposite of Luca in terms of the coffee I like to drink but I'm here to parrot what he said. With VST baskets the extraction seems pretty consistent so the easiest and cheapest way to try this will be to run a lower shot volume with your existing basket and see if you like the results.

Probably worth trying both equal extraction time (eg a slightly finer grind) and a shorter extraction time (eg your usual grind). From my measurements the former gives pretty constant extraction yield with VST baskets so you end up with higher extract in the cup. This is my preference (but it might not be yours).

If you like darker roasted coffee, you probably want to extract less from it to avoid it getting too bitter and overextracted. For that style of coffee, a big basket will allow you to extract less and have the rich, concentrated, strong portion of the shot, whilst giving you enough volume that you won't feel shortchanged. To investigate if this might interest you, you could always cut your extraction short on your 18g basket.

If you like lighter roasted coffee, on the other hand, this is a recipe for disaster. You will probably extract most of the acidity immediately and less of the interesting flavour and sweetness, unless you run the shots really long.

If you are selling coffee, you have a good incentive to roast darker and recommend larger baskets and lower extraction yields.

I agree with Mal. Just because it holds more coffee doesn't mean you need to pour it until it blondes. Stop it short and enjoy the depth and extra richness.

I use a "triple" basket for my mugs but still only pour 50-60ml of espresso, it really helps to cut through the milk.

24g makes for a wonderful Ristretto or a beautifully rich Piccolo...
Were my standard drinks for yonks.

    Are you talking an espresso?
    Give it a go
Like you I use 18g VST, dosed to 20g however.
Tried 20g VST dosed to 22g, too strong, my partner prefers it however
I could see a use for a 22g basket dosed to 24g maybe in one of those huge 350ml milk drinks

    started a topic 22-23g VST’s

    22-23g VST’s

So i’ve always used 18g VST’s, however recently have seen a lot of mention of 23g doses. I know a lot of cafes are doing close to this.
Apparently or provides more crema and a balanced profile.

    Does anyone here rock these?

To be honest, 18g is plenty enough caffeine for me, with 23gm-ers being essentially a triple shot! I’m hesitant to go higher, but if the flavour and experience is substantially increased i may look into it.

    Cheers
Working...
