  • Help with pour

Hi - keen for any feedback on the pour in the video. This is a particularly bad pour, but even my better ones still have an aspect of coffee squirting out and areas in the portafilter where it doesnt come through after a while

    https://youtu.be/0nS_QPCuWq8

    Rancilio silvia
Grind on about setting 3-4 of a rocky
18g into a espresso parts filter basket
    Relatively light tamp
40g of espresso out in about 30 seconds

Appreciate any help you're able to offer!

Distribution problem and a finer grind perhaps. You've been on CS for a while. Has this been a recent problem?
Can we assume you are using fresh beans?
Tell us about your grinder type and age. How old are the burrs?

You could try tamping a bit firmer, but grinding a bit finer and using a toothpick to break up all clumps will be the most help.

This would be my tip too. I tamp fairly firm, 18g in 32-36 out in approx 25s on my Silvia with bottomless basket and it works a treat. Best of luck.

A naked helps with showing how well you are tamping. A levelling/distributing tool can help (though not essential IMHO) but makinng sure the grinds are as evenly distributed across the puck and that your tamp is super level will help with spurting. I use a "Push" tamper, I find it excellent for keeping the surface level.
