Re: The Pav goes large... come election day

another option for milk is UHT organic - I use the Spaceway house blend, then cooling the milk is less of an issue - which works well if its a cool day, but I havent tried it when its warm.

Ive got a glow in the dark space egg fridge which runs off 12 volts which I also use to rotate the milk -it doesnt hold much but its a conversation starter b/c it has purple fluro side panels - but it has to be dark to be able to really see the lighting effect

Im running with my Bezzera Domus and a Super Jolly, or, if I get super motivated, i might just grab the Compak K10 from work for the day - then I should have no trouble keeping up with orders!

Last time I had a helper just to take orders though, and I think that this is an excellent idea, as you cant be expected to do everything yourself.

Ill be using the same coffee that I use at my work and will be charging $3 for a 8oz and $4 for a 12oz, with $1 from every small coffee, and $2 from every large going towards the fundraiser.

I also premix my chocolate with water, so all I have to do is squeeze and go on the day

Should be a bit of fun

    Cheers,

    Pat

UHT Pat! :P Even though organic, lets give customers the fresh stuff surely mate ...

My dividend/% of turnover compensation to the body that hires me is similar to yours - though in Sparkys situation here, it sounds voluntary to re-coup costs alone (?? Mark) - any profit if I did such a gig Id like to filter to the P&C (cause I champion them).

Considering the political context of your BDO Mark, try & have ol Pav as level as possible - ya dont want him leaning too much left, or right

      Fun, yes

Yep, its totally for charity, so all profits to the P&C.

As for politics, I figure Ill charge according to which way they lean. I figure libs wont mind paying and extra couple of bucks given the strong economy. With the trend towards economic conservatism, therell be a 10c reduction for labour voters and greens can get anything for a dollar (as long as they can prove that they voted green, like having dreads, driving a combi or providing proof that they burnt their Midnight Oil collection).

        Hows that sound?

Youre in safe Lib territory Ryan ... wont see any combis pulling up for a soy chai-latte mate!

Plenty of 4WDs parked, aggressively no doubt, & prepare for plenty of latte orders from the drivers ...

All fun, might pop by, as a mate in Ashgrove is holding an election party that night to celebrate democracy in action ...

Re: The Pav goes large... come election day

Certainly I agree that when it comes to milk fresh is best but its an interesting debate when it comes to considering the carbon footprint, as fresh needs to be constantly cooled, which is very energy inefficient.

Its a debate thats raging in England at the moment, where 93% of all milk consumed is fresh, Vs France, where 97% of all milk consumed is UHT

Taste is a big factor also, but the UHT organic milk I use comes up pretty good in a coffee, and I would be interesting to do a blind tasting with this Vs fresh milk to see who could pick the difference.

Also, its not exactly a cost-saving measure, coz the organic costs more, its more about convenience on the day!

Still, I have a think about fresh on the day, it just adds to the organisation a bit, having to grab an esky and rotate the ice when youre busy, which is a bit of a pain.

I could refrigerate the UHT at my work, which would make it a bit more palpable on the day...

Youre a very brave man Sparky.... But we live in a democracy, so we have to do what our wives tell us.

On the plus side, doing 200 coffees in a row should do wonders for your technique, so think of it as distilling a few months of trial and error into a few hours.

Best of luck---and dont forget to vote.

A few hours?? I was looking at 4-5 hours. I dont reckon I could make 200 coffees in less than that. I mean I have to wipe down the puck to remove all loose grinds and make sure it is solid and well presented before taking it to the Pav...

Some of us may live in a democracy. My wife felt she needed to do something to help during the day, so volunteering me has given her a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

                Cheers,

                Mark.

Well this is it... one final clean and a few last minute checks and then the Pav gets out the door and plays in the real world... Were looking at over 200 coffees... as long as I and the Pav last that long.

Thanks to Andy, Espresso Wow is on the menu. But skinny decaf soy lattes arent!

It wasnt smooth sailing up to here, with the pump motor dying last week. Luckily I had a spare. It was most likely the capacitor, but the machine got a whole motor-ectomy. Also my boiler sprung a leak after I decided to switch the machine off during the day. It only leaks when its cold, so the thermal cycling has loosened a seal... Given it will require a strip down, Im leaving it for now and leaving the machine on from now on.

Well see how it goes tomorrow....

If anyone is in my neck of the woods, Ill be at the Payne rd primary school polling station, The Gap from 8am to say midday.

                  Cheers,

                  Mark.

About 2 hours to go now and Im worried that the milk jugs that have been sourced may not be up to the job. I should have gotten a larger jug for volume milk.... in to the nail biting phase now.

You should have 100 of those coffees done by now, and have worked out the best way to do it. I know you wont read this until after youve collapsed later today, but Ive done the P&C thing on election day, and just wanted to let you know that someone was thinking of you....

                      Youre a good man, Mark.

Re: The Pav goes large... come election day

                        ... I survived. 7am to 3pm straight.

I had a great time and managed to keep within my capabilities. I only used one group in the Pav and kept the grinder quiet until a shot was required. The milk jug crisis was averted... only just and it all seemed to work well. There was a lot more just getting the machine there and warmed up. I was in an area without a sink or drain, so a couple of buckets sufficed for some rinsing water and a place to pour stale milk. Very few grinds were wasted as well. There was a tamper crisis a couple of days before, but that was handled with a trip to Super cheap for a nice gear stick knob and a chat to my mate Dave at the mech workshop, who lathed me up a nice stainless steel tamper and fit the gear stick knob to it... oh its such a beautiful thing and it really worked well during the day. My shots were very repeatable. I was actually a bit shocked by the improvement... So now my block of brass tamper will just have to serve as a paper weight...

Espresso Wow worked out very well. A big thanks to Andy for his contribution. I expected more orders, but a deluge before the polls opened and the sausages on the barby seems to steal some customers. I was looking at 200 coffees but we probably only managed a tad more than 100...

An enjoyable, but tiring day. But thats only because its not my day job.

                        Cheers,

                        Mark.

Ill get some piccies up soon

Did you do an espresso poll on the day to judge the voting trend?

                            Excellent.
I thought of you a couple of times during the day (eg: when I voted, stood in a queue without a coffee etc etc)

Im glad it all ran smooth Mark. I bet your whole coffee process improved too pulling 100 shots in a row.

                              It should have.
I spent 10 hours making coffees at the Aroma Fest in Sydney and my coffees definitely improved.
