I was at the same conference.

The thing with Katoomba Cafes is that they dont cope with a rush at all. The guy at Coffeebox was shaking his head when we walked in on saturday morning, saying that wed have to wait about half an hour for coffee. He looked stressed out and it was only 8am!

So we walked up to The Elephant Bean. They were packed out and not quite coping either. Theyd started using 1L milk jugs and steaming milk in bulk. That might be a common practise for them now, but it never used to be. Fresh hadnt even opened at that stage.

Either the convention organisers need to get around to the local cafes a few weeks in advance and warn them so they can put on extra staff (roughly 3,000 extra people all going for coffee), or people going to these conventions need to maybe give up coffee for a weekend, or these cafes need to realise that they will get busy at times, and learn to cope in a rush.

As I mentioned, I got to the Elephant Bean (Danes) for an okay-ish flat white. I had a double ristretto at Fresh a bit later, and that was pretty tart and sour, but not undrinkable. They use those green beanery beans, the ones where they roast in store and the marketing stuff says that roasting is as easy as making toast.
Ha, I know that pain. KCC should definately put out a calender to all the local cafes so they can have sufficient staff handy.

Did you see the Lavazza coffee carts they had this time though. I wasnt game enough to try one - I didnt get good feedback though from mates that did.... I think cos they thought I wouldnt have approved regardless hahaha :-X Its a start anyway!
