Re: Coffee Preparation Areas & Coffee Cupboards

Heres the minimalist/cheapskate coffee area of my kitchen:

Its in a corner - kitchen sink and window to the right, narrow counter facing dining area to the left. The counter would be great for putting finished coffees on so the waitress could serve them ... but unfortunately a waitress wasnt included with the coffee machine.
    Highlights:
    - Breville Ikon, with tamper and frequently used cups on top
    - Sunbeam em0450 grinder, with cut-up plastic bottle attachment for catching most of the loose grounds that fly out beyond the group head
    - home-made knock box, a plastic bucket (1kg honey in previous life) with metal rod through top

I store the roasted coffee in a cupboard under the kitchen bench, and the roasting equipment in a crate in a wardrobe. Currently my modest stock of green beans lives in my clothes cupboard, but as it grows Ill either have to find somewhere else, or get rid of clothes to free up space. Beans take precedence over clothes at the moment, so Good Sammy can expect some donations!

Hi Greg,.. the glass bowl on the counter..is that for tips
Nope, the bowl is not related to coffee or service. It usually holds avocados.

I dont know about lemon and coffee, but a tiny bit of orange peel is pretty nice, a bit like Cointreau.
    Greg
Indeed, rub some orange zest around the rim of the cup/glass - delicious. However, I prefer Cointreau...

Mayer lemons are a great little tree, especially grown in containers, a small bush supplies plenty of fruit, the fruit is very thin skinned and very juicy.
Yeah I had heard that the Meyer was very bountiful and up until yesterday it was what I had my eye on, though sadly not ideal for here because its not frost tolerant *snif*. This new variety however,.. is frost tolerant whoooooooot!!. I use lemons all the time to make fresh salad dressings and would love them in abundance to make cool drinks.

My mother said to me yesterday at the garden centre when we were looking at the lemon trees(bush rather),.. "yeah you buy one and you can supply me"  ;D . She paid and arm and a leg for a lemon in Dec 24 last year to use for Xmas lunch and she complained about the price of it wee wee wee all the way home.  ZOMG, ..dont know how the three little pigs got into that story.  :

    OK guys and gals,
Here is where my coffee gets made. This is just a corner of the kitchen, nothing very special except the coffee.
I keep a sample of the cups on the VBM, the rest are in the cupboard below and to the right.

Hi Greg,.. the glass bowl on the counter..is that for tips . Might put a tips jar up for larfs,..the kids will probably pay me with their loose teeth for their morning hot chocs. ;D

Remy, NE14COFFEE has some nice red cups up for grabs in the "pay it forward" thread, though dont think they are espresso size and neither are the ones on my bench (they come from Japan circa 1970 and for long blacks).

And yes, this is my setup at the roastery - Ditting and Giotto.  The Ditting is fantastic - very happy with it!  Im using the SB at home at this stage with the mazzer.
Thanks Denis, checked out the Pay it forward,.. but probably be better if a local CSr availed to save on shipping. I could probably pick some up here someplace. I dont want espresso, just thought yours looked so small that they might be espresso size.

I cannot drink espresso,.. ack.... though this could be different if I tried one made by someone who knows what they are doing.

Remy, I empty my pucks when container is about half full, they come out nice and dry and I crumble them up in my garden and pot plants, my Meyer lemon has gone berserk since I gave it a cafeine hit!! I feel as though I am doing my bit for the environment now!!
    I must get a lemon tree. :P

No seriously,.. Ive actually been wanting to get one for years, but their size put me off. Thanks to your comment,.. I checked out the garden centre yesterday and found a new variety called Lots a Lemons (Improved dwarf lemon. An abundance of full-sized fruit. Frost tolerant) which sounds perfect for mwa. Will sneak one of them into the garden very soon .

Have trialed having coffee grounds sitting in a container on bench to see of I can tolerate that smokey smell (that is when dumped in the kitchen bin),.. but to my surprise even after 3 days,. I cannot smell it,..spose cos it dries out. Resolved this problem nicely and I even enjoy squishing the dry puks through my fingers as I scatter them around the plants,..sick I know. So now I will need to buy a knock box afterall.

    Good thread, Remy.

Not showing you my cupboards :-[. Im not that organised to have all my coffee gear in one spot.

Have cups up in the cup cupboard. Brown beans up in the pantry. Corretto gear, popper and green beans down the bottom of the pantry, as well as assorted coffee machine stuff (cleaner, baskets, jugs, etc) in the cupboard under the stove.

So, thanks for the tips on being better organised, everyone.

My pic is of my Lelit combi set-up on the bench near the sink (pushed out of the way -I do pull it out a bit to use) AND, out the window on the patio (although it really should be packed up and out of the way every time : ) is my Corretto set-up.

    Cheers,
    Greg.

    Nice thread, Remy...

Heres my professional set up... I did have some input into how this got done. This is an older photo as we now have two grinders beside the machine. The new one is a silver Mazzer which matches the Brasilia just fine. I thought Id post this up again incase you might like to get some bright ideas. The knock box for that set up is also now a drawer under the machine. Hmm... on second thoughts, I really need to upgrade that photo!

And my domestic set up. Most of the coffee cups are up in the cupboard above the machine. I keep some of the things in the left drawer of the tray and anything else is in the pantry. I like how my steam arm goes over the sinks drip tray, that way, I just vent off the wet steam and it runs into the sink. Works great.
