When away from the coffee machine - what do you do
Re: When away from the coffee machine - what do yo
Presso - best body in the cup (of these 3) but bulkier than...
Plunger - good cup but breakable
Aero - light, easy to pack and wont break - a clean cup with less suspended particles (which can be good or bad).
When space and weight is available I take the presso but the Aero is great if not.
Re: When away from the coffee machine - what do yo
Good question raised by bolb,
You may like to read a self indulgent story of how I integrated coffee into a two week holiday. Fortunately I could pack the SB, cause I pack the car! SB and grinder went in first! Also packed 2kg of variety of fresh roasted beans. Teenagers in back seat of wagon wondered what is smell in car! Coffee beans gassing>
I also integrated looking for cafes with local roasters, and even local grown coffee.
If I wasnt able to pack SB, I would take both italian style stove top espresso and plunger. Both are great ways to enjoy coffee. For a grinder I would take a blade type nut/spice/coffee grinder. My plunger is stainless steel with vacuum sides. There are also cheap SS plungers that are not vacuum. Not so breakable.
The challenge with coffee is always the same. How can I prepare the coffee to the highest standard possible with available equipment and conditions?
For stove top espresso and plunger I would use different beans/blends, and roast them for the particular use, then experiment between the two.
Single origins are great in a plunger. Roast the beans lighter (maybe CS8) than you would for espresso, then savour the flavour of the beans. Examples of beans that I have found to work well with this mehod are Mountain Top Estate Peaberry, PNG Kinjibi Peaberry, Ethiopian Harrar, Yirgacheffe, Guatemalan Huehuetenango.
If using the stove top espresso, you can make an acceptable milk drink by shaking the milk in a container, then heating in the microwave.

well we are away at the moment and using the italian style stove pot.
The inlaws are drinking as well so its just as well i brought a full 500gm of roasted beans.
Will check out local cafes tomorrow.
