  • Cafes in and around Exhibition and Russell St Mel

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and have a keen interest in cafes in and around Exhibition and Russell Streets Melbourne. I have tried Cafe Maltitude and Blue Point on Russell and would be interested in other people’s views or suggestions in my area?

    Welcome to Coffee Snobs mb.

Im from Sydney but Melbournes not that big.
Do you need to limit yourself to Rusell and Exhibition?
Im sure the CS crowd will recommend the best Melbourne has to offer but In not sure how close they are to where youve stated.

    Heres some I know of:

    First Pour
Located at 26 Bond Street, Abbotsford.  The roastery is next door, at 22 Bond Street.

Car: There is usually ample parking in Bond Street or directly outside First Pour, but note that Bond Street is no entry from Victoria Street.  If you are coming from Church Street (ie. coming from the city), turn left into South Audley Street, right at Southampton Crescent and right again into Bond Street.  If you are coming from Burnley Street, turn right into Duke Street, left at Southampton Crescent and left again into Bond Street.

Tram: The number 109 tram runs along Victoria street, from the City to Box Hill.  There is a stop at South Audley Street (Houghtons Dry Cleaners).

    The Maling Room
    Corner Maling & Canterbury Rd
    Canterbury

    St Ali
    12-18 Yarra Place
    South Melbourne

Thanks yes i thought I would start small and work out, so as to compare as many as possible. Will definately look at new places. I have also tried the Bean room which at the time was good but many tell me it was better.

When I head up to the north east of the city, I usually enjoy the coffee in Piadinas Slowfood (50 rear Lonsdale st - behind Bluebag) and Espresso Bar (corner Exhibition and Lonsdale, below some hotel).

At another end of Russel St - actually slightly west of Russell on Collins St - Ive never had a dud coffee at the Antica Gelateria del Corso. They also sell gelati which is apparently great, but I only worked there while it was cold...

Slightly EAST of Exhibition Ive also had amazing coffee at the European on Spring St, opposite Parliament. They even have one of those lever press coffee bars - but will only make you an espresso or espresso macchiato with those.

Slightly further away, on the corner of Latrobe and Swanston Ive enjoyed the coffee at Mr Tulk, next to the State Library.

Finally if you head far west, try my current haunt, Wheat, at 530 Lonsdale or thereabouts. Great coffee and service.

ok, so on recommendation from that last post I just went to brother baba budan on little bourke after lunch.

That place is on another level compared to the places I mentioned. It was amazing. The smell alone killed me; the nectar they served brought me back to life.

I stand by my reccs but this one is the pick so far.

Had a coffee inside the 120 Collins St Building. I cannot remember the name of the place.

Was not bad. Not an equivalent of BBB, but drinkable

Maltitude how was it??? My old cafe.

Piadina has great food. The guys are so driven. Fresh fruit and veg which they store at most at room temp which is so old school and taste soooooo much better. I hope its blood orange season too, because they make the best blood orange juice. I heard luca had a bad juice there the other day!! High standard in food which is always fresh due to the size. Special cafe!!!
