  • More espresso and no more sugar

What a difference fresh roasted beans make.  Suddenly Ive had to change my coffee drinking habits.

I used to have cappucino with 1 1/2 sugars, and rarely had coffee after lunch time because it would prevent me from sleeping.  I thought I was drinking good coffee and it might have been good when I bought it (from a well-known Carlton coffee place).  But living up the bush I bought more than I needed so the roasted beans would have become quite stale over time.

Since resurrecting my coffee snobs green beans and roasting them myself - first roast was at the weekend - I now have an espresso when I wake up.  So sweet it is that I dont need or want to add sugar or milk.  I found that milk in the breakfast brew was not 1/100th as good as espresso.  With the espresso, I can still taste the coffee after a couple of hours.   Its sweet with so many taste and smell sensations (my precious Brazil CofE from 2005). Yummmm.

Then later in the day I might succumb and have another espresso.

In the evening its a cappucino with a decaffeinated roast (Ive been roasting a Swiss Water blend).  The decaf tastes great with milk and sometimes Ive mixed it with a colombian roast which I roasted just past second crack.  No sugar whatever I do.  Now that Im getting better with the milk and with the fresh beans its even sweeter (with no sugar) than when I added gobs of sugar to the pre-roasted blends.  Again, so much taste sensation coming through the milk.

I wonder if anyone else has changed their coffee habits since roasting their own?

Everyone I make coffee for no longer takes sugar (with my home roasts).

I only have sugar and milk in bad coffee.
        (so never in my roasts)

        ;-)

...and if you see me reach for the sugar when Im at a cafe you will know why.

"Only add sugar to coffee because you want to...
          not because you have to."
          Randy G.

Coffee that NEEDS sugar to be consumed should not be consumed.
Lifes too short to drink bad coffee.

I generally now only drink a long black or espresso and definitely no sugar.

Long gone are the days of milk top ups.

Yup, its been years since Ive used sugar. That stopped when I started roasting my own.

Same. With one incredibly stubborn and frustrating exception. Hes lucky hes such a nice bloke  :

I havent touched sugar since I got my Giotto. And Im getting over milk. I never thought Id become an espresso drinker, but I seem to be drinking it straight a fair bit at the moment.

I was introduced to the piccolo long black last week and it has re-invigorated my delight in discovering coffee! You do lose a bit of the body, but you can explore so many more flavours and aromas! Ahh, coffee

                  Oh double ditto!

And yep... I stopped using sugar the day I tasted my first properly made coffee at Cosmorex (a few weeks before I bought my machine). I learned that day that good coffee didnt need sugar.
