What a difference fresh roasted beans make. Suddenly Ive had to change my coffee drinking habits.
I used to have cappucino with 1 1/2 sugars, and rarely had coffee after lunch time because it would prevent me from sleeping. I thought I was drinking good coffee and it might have been good when I bought it (from a well-known Carlton coffee place). But living up the bush I bought more than I needed so the roasted beans would have become quite stale over time.
Since resurrecting my coffee snobs green beans and roasting them myself - first roast was at the weekend - I now have an espresso when I wake up. So sweet it is that I dont need or want to add sugar or milk. I found that milk in the breakfast brew was not 1/100th as good as espresso. With the espresso, I can still taste the coffee after a couple of hours. Its sweet with so many taste and smell sensations (my precious Brazil CofE from 2005). Yummmm.
Then later in the day I might succumb and have another espresso.
In the evening its a cappucino with a decaffeinated roast (Ive been roasting a Swiss Water blend). The decaf tastes great with milk and sometimes Ive mixed it with a colombian roast which I roasted just past second crack. No sugar whatever I do. Now that Im getting better with the milk and with the fresh beans its even sweeter (with no sugar) than when I added gobs of sugar to the pre-roasted blends. Again, so much taste sensation coming through the milk.
I wonder if anyone else has changed their coffee habits since roasting their own?
