Now then, Wushoes - David S

are you the coffee guru im looking for?

what would you recommend i do or choose after reading this string of messages, considering i own the Jura?
Are you having a stab at me?

I actually like what MCB has to say about visiting local roasters who do it for a living. Chat and discuss your needs. What you want in a blend and Im sure theyll point you in the right direction with one of their blends or a SO

Craig, Im going to suggest that you buy either Defibrillator Espresso Blend from Cuppacoffee, details on the left, or Espresso WOW from Brownbay, also linked to the left. Either of these will give you a great starting point. Im not suggesting them for your particular machine, coffees blends arent created that way. These blends, however, are made specifically for espresso coffee, and the roasters themselves are very passionate about their espresso. There are a lot of other blends that you could try, we have a lot of sponsors selling beans, however Im giving you these two recommendations because they will work, and I dont want your head to explode.

If you want to look at roasting your own, the equipment you need is fairly basic - you could try a popcorn popper, there is a specific thread here on the subject, and the only other thing youll really need is a sieve or two to cool them down. If you want to roast a larger quantity and have more control, youll need a heatgun with either a stainless steel bowl or a breadmaker (if using the breadmaker the setup is called a corretto.) Youll still need the sieves to cool the beans down, maybe a stand to hold the heatgun, and a multimeter can be useful to check your temps, though that can come later. You can buy a starter pack of green beans from Greenbay, again to the left.

    Okay, so it goes deeper!

Me being completely Stoopid......how easy is it to have beans roasted, I mean do we have someone roast them for us and if so Where, or do we buy and use our own machinery, if the latter is the way to go then what would I need to purchase and what are the cost implications? I would also imagine I would need to sit a course in the art of making coffee???

Is all this necessary when I own an automatic machine?

Will it really make a substantial difference to the finished article?

Guys...can you give me some recommendations for good espresso as a starting point before my head explodes!!!

I thought I was venturing into the world of coffee not building a space shuttle! He He.
    Craig,

you need to use roasted beans in your machine. Your machine has a grinder built in, so you do not need your beans to be ground.

You have a number of options. Buy beans from a supermarket - not recommended - normally stale.

Buy green beans and roast them your self. Not recommended at this stage. This is for the more adventurous.

Buy beans from a local roaster. I am not sure where in Perth you are based. Some of the roasters that I know of are: Antz in ya Pantz (968 Alb Hwy Vic Park), 5 Senses in Rockingham, Fiori Coffee in West Perth. There is also a cafe in Kelmscott that roasts its beans and a gourmet shop in Midland gate. Plus there are undoubtedly others. I suggest that you pick a roaster near you and have a chat with them. They should recommend a blend or two for you to start with. Keep trying other ones, until you find one that suits your taste.

    Good luck with the search

    Hi Craig,

Its great that you found the path to fresh coffee. A lot of people get lost and look at branding or what cafe looks cool. Using coffee that is fresh is really important, the next step for you is to learn how to make coffee. Thats the hardest part and you never stop learning. The guys at Epic Cafe do a coffee course which the crew are pretty skilled down your way.
Always wear several hats when you explore coffee, because there are many different views and opinions. All you need to do is, be open to all ideas and choose which one suits you best. Coffeesnobs is a great website and offer pretty amazing service. Good luck in your search. Ohh yeah, upgrades in equipment never stop!!

    Re: Brand new to Coffee.......Help!!!

I am working my way through Brownbay and also local coffees. The different tastes are amazing. I have a couple of favorites from Bean Bay but the selection keeps changing. I now buy a selection of local coffees from a local roaster (roasted on the day I buy them) and the Bean Bay coffee beans which I usually receive within 2-3 days of roasting (by mail) - so you cannot get fresher roasted beans than that without roasting your own. The local postie is starting to look forward to my orders being delivered due to the aroma they get in the post office.

Unfortunately that bug will probably affect you in the near future ;D ;D All of us here have been affected by the Coffeesnob affliction of trying to find the perfect cup of coffee for us - which is as difficult as trying to hide a dollar from the tax man. :
So a considerable number have taken to roasting their own in a variety of roasting devices. Usually these are made from items that I would never had considered as being suitable for roasting coffee. :-/
