    Hi,

    My wife loves the Peruvian coffee (not sure if its a blend or not) when they have it at the Maling Room. For those who have the same taste I was just wondering if there is anything else (or even similar) that you would recommend.

    This BeanBay Ive already purchased the Roaster Sample Pack, the Zimbabwe Pezuru Estate and the Mountain Top Estate Bin 35 which will last a loooong time. I would love to get all the beans to try its pretty hard when the 2.5kg lots will last nearly half a year (!!) so I thought Id get some recommendations before buying anything else. :-)

      Well, between 4 to 6 months. ;-)

      2.5kg should give around 2kg of roasted beans and if each coffee uses 8g then that gives us 250 coffees. At most we make 2 coffees a day, sometimes we dont make any so a bag will last a while. And if we happen to choose a bean we dont really like then were in trouble as the only alternative would be to roast them and then give them away.

          Yep... thats why Ive ordered a starter pack too! :-)

          Im just asking as Id be interested to see what other recommendations I can get as I wouldnt mind storing up a few other types of beans.

            The Peruvian coffee was a single origin. Im glad you liked it. Once you roast yourself you will start to drink more. Buying green is so cheap. Compare your work with a commercial roasters and taste the difference. Best way to learn.
            Just brought 1500kgs of a single origin last week. Really looking forward to trying it tomorrow.

              Hi griffster!

              I highly recommend any African bean. Yemen Bani Ismail, and any Ethiopian (Harar or Yirg) are great beans. Small and ugly, but they are ones I would say give a try if you can get hold of them.

              Excellent as single origin or blend.

                Colombian and Brazils make for a smooth taste without too much acidity, for a bit of zing PNG peaberry, Indonesian varieties, African beans for acidity and chocolate notes, I could go on and on, try as many varieties as you can and explore the wonderful differences between countries, varieties and types of processing.
                I endeavour to try new varieties as often as possible but still remain true to my favourites:--
                Colombian Bachu
                Honduran Pacamara
                PNG peaberry Kinjkibi
                Indian Monsoon Malabar
                Ethiopian Yirgachef and Harar
                Kenyan AA
                Costa Rican Tarazu
                Peru Villa Grace Estate......................................
                I have experimented with blends but lately have been sticking with so roasts and repeated a few blends that were successful for me.
                I love home roasting and cant wait till my next session out in the garage with Corretto!!.

                  Thanks for all the recommendations everyone... that should keep me busy roasting for a while! :-)

                  Ive noticed that the Yemen and Yirg are both very highly regarded and look forward to getting some to try.

                  AndyL: 1500kg worth of beans?! Does the Maling Room roast their own beans? I read from "The Coffee Guide...Melbourne (2008 Edition)" that Maling Room gets their beans from Atomica. By the way, Maling Room was voted the best coffee and brunch place in Melbourne.... by my wife! ;-)
