          you order long blacks in cafe's as you know you'll at least be able to politely get it down no matter how bad it is whereas an espresso would be sprayed around the room.

              you travel abroad and take your own Hario handheld grinder and pour-over setup, as well as a good deal of home roast in order 'to avoid disappointment'

                you travel from home to Melbourne to Newcastle to Moruya, Merimbula, Sydney back to Melbourne in 5 days and the best coffee is the last one before leaving home and the first one when you get back. If I'd gone to Narooma it would've be a different story, maybe next time.

                  So there is no decent coffee at Merimbula then? May be going later in the year...

                    the trip wasn't business and certainly not pleasure but with the plethora of machines and people boasting "great coffee" it's a shame that the odds of good coffee at any one place are so heavily stacked against you. All grinders were dosers, one of my pet hates in cafe settings. The predominant flavour through the trip was ash. Can't say that you won't find good coffee in Merimbula but with the limited time I had, I didn't. For the most part everyone did a good job of the milk (those that used fresh milk in an empty jug) but I was after a coffee...............

                      I can relate to "When you critique a baristas technique and know the coffee will not taste as it should" and have even offered on the spot training for a coffee killer at a local cafe....

                        You converse with the barista at a cafe and during the conversation he offers you a free espresso of what's in the grind to ask for your opinion. Happened twice so far
