  • Problem with under-sink filtration

    Hi All,

I haven't been around these parts for quite some time - mostly to remove temptation! Good to be back

I have had my ECM Technika IV Profi plumbed in for the last 4 years or so using a Brita C150 under-sink kit. I apologise up-front if these guys are not site sponsors, not sure of their status:

I had it installed by a plumber. I have changed the cartridge every 12 months as per recommendation. I currently have the C150 Finest cartridge installed.

I have had a periodic problem with what appears to be air trapped in the system. This happened with the first cartridge, not with cartridges 2 and 3 and now it is doing it again with cartridge 4 i.e. the current one.

    Problem scenarios:
    • When the goose-neck filter tap is opened (e.g. to fill the kettle), there is up to a 20 second delay before water begins to trickle out. The pressure then steady builds.
    • I actuate the ECM and there is a very audible 'grunt' that is made when the pump churns through the air. The flow is almost instant out of the group.
If there is a big delay in water coming out of the goose-neck tap and I have the ECM switched on, I actuate the machine for a second to clear the air and then the water instantly flows out of the tap.

I have had the original plumber look at this, who charged me for essentially shrugging his shoulders... I had another plumber here just the other day to fix a leak (unrelated) and he was either disinterested or had no idea.

Has anyone encountered this before and is there a way to fix this? I would greatly appreciate any guidance or insight that anyone can offer here.

    Thanks
    Simon

Is there a back-flow preventer installed on the system? If not that'd be my first stop for a fix.

To be honest, I have never heard of such a device. I don't think something like that came with the kit. I've attached the installation guide which details the pieces of the kit.

What JP just suggested. I have the same filtration without that problem, I’m almost certain that the PLV I have installed acts as a one way valve but I did have a problem with it that was different. I had very low flow rate and my Giotto Evo’s pump would some times cavitate, I fixed it by pure luck as the people who supplied the kit (Bombora) were at a loss so I pulled the PLV apart, inspected it (as I had zero idea what I was looking for) put it back together and in an voila all good..... maybe worth a try?

Is that the little 3M white plastic device - pressure limiter right?

Hmmm, just googled Bombora PLV and it shows the kit I purchased with the chrome inline PLV, your local Plumbing shop or hardware store will have the generic plastic type. From memory 350kpa is what you need...... but hey I could be totally wrong to. Just my experience

As in “e”? Could be, I have a couple of the plastic ones from previous filter kits. My system is about 2 1/2 years old so maybe they have changed the kit, try Bombora for confirmation I’m sure they will be able to advise you if the valve is serviceable or bin material

The 1-Way Valve/Check Valve is mentioned here...
It may be worthwhile to grab a new one from your local supplier and fit before the PLV.

                Mal.

In your attached instructions. The 7th line down under:
                  1. Important Information

"A certified pressure limiting valve not exceeding 650kPa (95psi), dual check backflow prevention valve must be installed on the inlet line
immediately preceding this water filter housing. This valve is included with this system (see Item 10 in Parts Section)."

I see no correlating Item 10 in the Parts Section however.

The backflow prevention valve prevents the water from flowing backwards and hence drawing air back into the system.
