Well I did ask about it initially but I only really had eyes for the E37J and wasn't really up for any more coffee. I'm not that interested in single dosing but I did check out the E37SD. I wondered if the single dosing gear could be retrofitted to other Ceado grinders or other brands for that matter. JetBlack_Espresso

Flynn, doing a little Saturday afternoon roasting and thought of your morning post. Just wondering if you compared the Niche to the Ceado while you were there.?
Ps Glad your morning started so well with freshly serviced gear

I sit here at 10.40AM, on a bright and sunny Saturday morning, reflecting on my dead EM6910 and the new Lelit Elizabeth, its worthy successor, which is still at least a week away from delivery. I have sipped a brew from my French press - no 40 second pour of thick, oozy goodness. But I did at least use freshly ground coffee...

Coffee Nirvana
I sit here at 9 o'clock on a dull overcast Saturday morning reflecting on life, caffeinated life to be more precise, after enjoying those moments that bring us to this place: the quest for great coffee. For the past week I've had my usual kit off to to the team at Jetblack for a good service. Well I am happy to report that I got it back yesterday and fired up the Profitec, ground ~20 grams of Campos Superior from my Macap grinder (with new burrs fitted) and poured a shot that, when topped up with Norco full cream, produced abrew so good I had to immediately go back for seconds.
All week I had been 'struggling' with my backup kit of Mazzer Mini and Olympia Cremina. Thank you, thank you, your sympathy is appreciated ?. But as I sit here, I am given cause to consider the following::
- there's everything to gain by having your equipment professionally serviced at least once in a while. Every time I have had this done the coffee has never been better. Thank you Jetblack!
- the Mazzer Mini is an excellent grinder. Not the fastest but I'm not serving a queue of customers and the more important consideration is shot quality with which you can be assured of.
- don't be afraid to push the boundaries. The pour was 40 seconds to produce about 40mls (split between 2 cups). Over extracted? Not at all. I'm constantly finding my shots are better with a finer grind resulting in longer preinfusion and pour times. But that's me. But I received the grinder back already calibrated and ready to use.
- Campos Superior is a good blend but, for me, not good enough to buy again. Admittedly it was 2 weeks post-roast when I bought it but still quite drinkable.
- I won't be lashing out on a new grinder yet. I was given a quick demo of the Ceado E37J and E37S yesterday and I was so tempted to buy the E37J. I managed to keep my wallet in my pocket as I wanted to try my newly serviced grinder and as already reported, I wasn't disappointed.
- the importance of servicing the grinder regularly, something I admit I have neglected but that if you want better coffee, then clear those stale grinds from your burrs. Each time I have done so, my coffee has improved.
Which brings me back to the Ceado E37J. One of the things that attracted me to the E37 range was how easy it is to access the burrs for cleaning: remove 3 screws and the upper and lower burrs are revealed. A big tick.
Then there's the grind quality: fluffy, no lumps.
Quiet? Very! Don't believe me? check the WLL youtube videos.
Quick? Fast enough - about 2 g per second but as I mentioned above, I'm not making coffee for impatient cafe customers. 10 seconds to dose a 20g shot is fast enough.
Sturdy? You bet. Very little plastic. And it is low and squat with a small hopper so good for sitting under kitchen cupboards.
Shot quality compared to my Macap with conical burrs? Well you will have to wait - but, knowing myself, that won't be long ?
Then there is the issue of flat vs conical burrs. My own findings are that conical opens up a larger range of flavours that are usually not always enjoyable. Using my Mazzer Mini reminded me that you can get excellent coffee from flat burrs.
Anyway, that's it. TL;DR? Well, next time you hear from me will be to report on the Ceado or posting a for sale notice on my Macap MXK and maybe my Mazzer Mini.
