Yes I've noticed a couple of quality roasteries that have developed their own instant offering, I've never tried them but I suppose it's safe to assume they're better than a supermarket instant.

I'm with Rocky being more than happy with the non instant DIY espresso .

    Cheers

And yet, while I do tend to agree, one very respected Brisbane Roaster, Wolff Coffee Roasters, does actually also make their own Instant Coffee:

Well there you go - and all this time I thought Instant Coffee was 5h1t. What do I know.
I'm never likely to know, one way or the other, because my life is dedicated to the pursuit of great Espresso and unless the Nursing Home staff (yes, I know there are no Nurses employed anymore) pour it into me with a tube down my throat I don't see myself ever drinking Instant Coffee again in my life.
...and I don't believe in Hell which is fortunate as I'm sure if there was a Hell there would only be Instant Coffee available.

Yep, know who he is and that the company he works for sell an awful lot of beans to Instant Coffee companies here in Oz, so probably at least one reason why the Instants he tested all got marked so evenly. As mentioned above, don't want to offend anyone, especially if they're customers...

Yeah John Russell Story’s 30yrs of industry experience is way less valuable than the opinions of CSers. You guys probably don’t even know who he is I guess.

Perhaps we're too mature to appreciate the quality.

Bah humbug.... I think I'm classed as 'mature' and I second the opinion that instant is awful.

    Cheers

Instant coffee quality improves as tastes mature.

So! now we know, told by no lesser person than an SMH foodie, what a load of rubbish.

I notice all of the listed brands were scored remarkably close together (wouldn't want to get anyone offside) have tried a few of them, they are all very much what you would expect, bloody awful.

Couple of quotes that tickled my fancy:

"The results are very standardised [and] you get consistent results. You don't need to be a trained barista," he said.)?

"Why should instant coffee be bad?" he said. "Why should you be skilled to enjoy good coffee?"
