  • [BNE] - Group Cupping Session / Meetup

I'm currently working on improving my palate and am delving into the world of cupping. Thought it might be more fun with other folks and having recently moved to Brisbane, all my coffee nerd friends are based in Melbourne. Zoom cuppings are fun, but would be even better with some other likeminded folks in person.

Anyone Brisbane based interested in either a one-off or recurring excuse to get together, talk about coffee, do some cupping and improve our palates together?

Yep EAF Id be more than interested.
In the past I would have had contacts for commercial site(s) to arrange as meeting point.
But this year has blown that line well and truly up.

These were done regularly in Brissy some decade or so back with some very good people no longer here!

I'm Sth East bayside so not the most central point to gather.
And happy to contribute with the equipment I have on hand, and a cple roasts of beans I currently have.

Ive noted of late more Brisbane posters.....So come on Brissy CS'ers join in.
Earthandfire's timely call out could make an unprecedented contribution to your coffee world ! .....in these unprecedented times.

Not a lot of time available with a small child at home, but will watch with interest in case the stars align and I can make it!

      Edit: Southwest Brisbane, Oxley area.

I am from the sunny Gold Coast but would make the trip up for something like this.

Also many coffee toys I could bring to a meet, Flair, Chemex, V60, Niche grinder etc for people who haven't used/seen some of those.

Interested in getting into cupping as well.

I'm Brissy southside (Coorparoo) based BTW and if folks are keen for a coffee play day rather than just cupping, happy to adjust plans. I can bring a bunch of toys like DE1+, Niche Zero, Lido E, Mypressi to play with if we go more in that direction.

Brilliant...there EAF you've started something! wonderful.
And Whorl I'd be happy to work with your time constraints.
            1 in all in..imho.

Well to offer 'other' worthwhile contributions.......
I feel like a boys scout with his pocket knife on the way to the OK Corral !

            - 2 stage softened filtered water in sufficient quantities as required.
            - Temperature Adjustable Kettle.
            - Couple of Tested / Accurate Temp Gauges
            - 1 ea 80mm / 60mm class flat blade grinders - Electric. (Not sure they'd be needed given Grinder capability atm.)
            - Another Lido - if required ( but a II).
            - Presso.
            - No cupping bowls, but should have sufficient 4/6ou cups to cater for the number of attendees

To remain CoVid safe / legal.....
Could I make a suggestion that everyone bring their own -
            Hand Sanitiser,
Hand wipes / paper kitchen towels.
Couple of marked Spoons - just a piece of coloured wool tied on them or etc.
If you have a 60-100ml bowl (as a cupping bowl) definately bring that.
A sealable container of fluid* to sanitise your spoons, as you go.

            * Can anyone make a suggestion as to what is acceptable ?
            ie not bleach diluted
But is Vinegar solution or salty water sufficient to sanitise spoons in this setting ?

PS forgot Im Ormiston (Cleveland way) so we are more central than I first envisaged!

Any spoon sanitizer will taint flavour, but I understand what you mean.
I actually think public cuppings in commercial settings are a think of the past because of Covid unfortunately.
We don’t need to cup though to work on palate training. Any tasting plate with a variety of fruit (acid) something sweet and savoury will be enough

I would be interested and am happy to provide the premises, if the date, time, etc are suitable.
I am Gold Coast based, close to Pacific Fair, and on the water.
Outside deck area is perfect for gatherings. Plenty of room, and covid safe.
We could incorporate some fellow home roasters and make a nice event out of it.
Let me know your thoughts, as it is a bit of a drive for those who live in Brisbane.

I am interested too. Also based on the GC but can travel to Brisbane. Very generous of you Bosco_Lever to offer your house. Would love to see your machine (I have a Profitec Pro800).

How do folks feel if we aim for a date the next 2-4 weeks? Seems like most interest is from the Gold coast area so I'm good to drive down. Many thanks for the offer of space Bosco - very generous! On my side I'll just need to find a date to rope my wife into a morning / afternoon of solo toddler wrangling. Anyone have any preferred dates or dates to avoid? I'm assuming weekend's would be best for most folks?

Thanks again for posting EAF and also to Bosco for the kind offer to host.
I'm ok with any of the next 4 weekends ...after this one coming.

Also happy to do one around Brisbane in future if anyone can't do GC.

Agreed, great idea EAF and one of the first 3-4 weekends in November would be my preference (7th-22nd). I would be an outside chance for the last weekend of October of that works for everybody.

I also did a quick google on COVID safe practices for cupping, and seems SCA has an updated protocol that would work fairly well:
                          https://sca.coffee/covid19

Basically the modified protocol is give each person a spoon and shot glass , where the spoon is used to transfer coffee into the shot glass, and the final tasting is done via the shot glass. The spoon should not touch the mouth or glass at any stage. Rinse/wash spoon and glass between samples.

I can think of a slightly different approach where one spoon is used per coffee, and tasters just pick up the same spoon to transfer the coffee into his own glass. This way it avoids the need constantly washing the spoon in between samples.

Sorry for ghosting everyone - work went mental and I lost track of time. How are calendars looking? What about Sun 15th or the weekend after (21/22 Nov)?
