Just out of curiosity are you using the OEM basket. I have a bezzera duo de and I had the same soupy puck. I switched to a vst and dose the correct amount for the basket and this has given me dry pucks. It was a huge improvement. The headspace comment I think is spot on as the vst is a deeper straight wall basket.
Hi, and excuse me for jumping in. I have just purchased a Duo DE and am interested in the VST baskets. Can you tell me where you get them from in Australia and which specific basket suits the Duo's BZ group portafiller?

This is solid advice. My Silvia pucks are, and always have been wet. Some have even been borderline soupy but in the cup, the espressos are absolutely delicious. That is what matters most to me.
That sounds almost spot on. You could possibly grind a bit finer if you feel like the coffee is a touch weak or sour, but if it’s tasting good then don’t change anything.
I’ve just done some fine tuning and am dosing 18g and pulling 2 x 30 ml shots (not sure what that equates to) and tastes not too bad ?. I stil have water on top of the puck, but the puck itself is nice and firm and falls out in one piece. At least I have a starting point now. Thanks guys, any additional info greatly appreciated.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the appearance of the puck, it’s not a very good way to trouble shoot problems. However you definitely need to lower that dose unless you’re using a specific triple shot basket. I’d follow Yelta’s suggestion for sure and see how you go. You can always fine tune the grind setting from that starting point to give the desired result.
The Magica is very similar to the Domus Galatea (my machine) 25 grams seems like a pretty heavy dose, are you using a double or triple basket?
I use an EP double basket with my Bezzera, my dose is 18 grams, this gives me approx 8mm from the lip of the basket to the tamped surface of the puck, this gap is necessarily because unlike many other machines the shower screen extends into the basket, updosing beyond the 8mm gap will cause the puck to contact the screen resulting in a mess and wet pucks, mind you a wet puck is no big deal if the coffee is good.
If you have been over dosing it would pay to give the machine a chemical back flush to clean things up, remove the shower screen first and give it a good wash, then replace it and back flush, as a matter of interest, its a good policy to give it a water back flush after every session.
25 grams in 25 seconds is in the ball park, I aim for 30 grams in 30 seconds.
