I usually buy my beans from local roasters in my area. However, last week I had a look at the bags on offer at Woolworths.
Maybe this is a naive question, but can anyone explain to me why a roast date was almost always absent from all these bags? Apart from a DC bag called 'The Darkness' which I have not tried yet, Soulful Sip, and Campos, all the others were only bearing a 'best by' date.
Given that I only drink espresso, where freshness is of great importance, I question how is this possible. Especially when some brands allure to the Italian espresso one will be able to obtain with their beans, on the back of these bags. As an Italian living in Melbourne, and originally from San Piero, 500 metres from La Marzocco factory in Mugello, I cannot stand these practices.
Also, can anyone help in interpreting these dates? I have tried looking around but they seem pretty shady, as some roasters take a 1 year period (so, if BB date states DEC 2021, it should have been roasted in DEC 2020), others 2 years. With others the roast date does not equal to the packing date etc.
Cheers,
David
