Well, the single shot/single wall Breville basket (part # SP0001518) arrived from Amazon US today. Much earlier than originally indicated (they said May, and it's barely even April!)

So, with great trepidation, I made the first cup with the new basket. This was my second cup of the day; I'd actually been making my first cup with the dual wall basket as supplied with the Bambino Plus, when the delivery arrived.

    So good for back-to-back comparisons!

I decided to initially just use the exact same settings on both grinder and and Bambino Plus as I have been using with the dual wall basket.

So, 8g of coffee into the basket (ground at a setting of ~2.7 for 5.5s on the Specialita), tamp down with my handy-dandy Matow calibrated tamper, tare my cup on the scales, and push the "1 cup" button on the Breville to see what happens.

    (drum roll, please...)

    27s later, I get a perfect 16g extraction!

    How did it taste?

OK. About as good as a good shot from the dual wall basket. Maybe a smidge sweeter?

A bit of an anti-climax, really! LOL

The last piece of the puzzle arrived today:

A "Matow" brand 54mm calibrated tamper. Arrived today from Amazon, $38. (I sprung the extra $3 for the nice wooden handle.)

I wasn't convinced I really needed this, as I felt my tamping pressure was pretty consistent, but the results speak for themselves.

I haven't made a bad coffee today! They are all "da bomb"! :-)

Very pleased with how things have come along. I've probably pulled about 60-odd shots since getting the Eureka grinder last Friday, many of them bad due to overextraction, going straight down the sink. But the randomness of that seems to have disappeared today, coinciding with the appearance of new tamper at 10:30 this morning. Been getting perfect 2:1 shots (8g coffee, 16g extraction) first time, every time, all day.

So not too shabby. Will have to wait until May until the single-wall basket arrives from the US. But until then, I'm more than satisfied with my current results. $38 well spent, I think!

Best shot so far with the Aldi Honduran medium roast beans (full bodied, and sweetest so far).

Critical data: 8g coffee, 16g extraction, 29 seconds. Specialita grind setting: 2.7 (I've been watching James Hoffman youtube videos, LOL.)

And here's a picture of the latte art for that coffee. I call it "Los Alamos, 1945".

    Definitely "da bomb"! ;-)

Doesnt work well with me. I suspect could be a lower dosage couldnt provide enough ‘support’ with high pressure brewing

After a couple of days of experimentation with the single basket (dual wall) so far, I've found I'm getting much more consistent results with an 8g dose rather than 7g. I believe this is actually due to the design of the basket rather than the dose per se, in that the single shot baskets are more conical shaped, whereas the double shot baskets are more cylindrical. The conical shape means that the tamper is actually hitting the walls of the basket on the edges for the smaller dose, while the extra volume in the 8g dose means the tamper is just pressing on the coffee, for a much more consistent result.

I'm using the grind setting of about 3.1-3.2 on the Specialita, for Aldi "Single Origin Honduras Medium Roast" beans, with a roast date of just on 4 weeks ago (don't hate me, where else was I going to buy a bag of beans on a Friday evening when my grinder turned up unexpectedly several days early?) I think the results so far are actually quite decent when I get close to the 2:1 extraction ratio (but remember, I'm not really a snob! ;-)

I often do a 7gm shot at lunch time.
Just had one, 7gm.VST basket, EM 6910, with EM480 grinder.

Usually use a 15gm VST for my breakfast coffee.

As some have said, can be a bit weak.
    But worth playing around with.

    Mine are Flat white.

My wife has 8-8.5g in the single size, single wall basket with the Bambino. She enjoys this, but is not super fussed about taste (ie she is ok with pods).

The ground often separate from the basket and stick to the shower screen, they drop easy enough but it is a bit annoying, especially when they drop before I get the knock box under there.

I have removed the plastic from inside the pf (on advice from old threads on the EM6910), does not seem to affect anything. I note that the volume from the two spouts is rarely equal.

I use a single basket on my VBM everyday, espresso for my son and latte for myself. I don't have a problem with pulling a good shot although I certainly tamp lightly for all my shots whether they are singles or double. Maurice

That's a good insight, more coffee less volume.

I'm been messing around with using a 6.5g dose in the dual wall single shot basket that comes with the Bambino Plus, and have been getting acceptable and consistent results with that. The 6.5g gram dose comes from the contents of a Vittoria "Esspressotoria" pod I open up and empty into the basket... just experimenting with while I wait for new grinder to arrive Monday (and, I've still got some pods to get through!)

I've ordered the single wall basket at a usurious price from Amazon US, but won't arrive for a few weeks yet. Breville Australia are out of stock. Breville NZ have stock, but won't ship to Australia.

Breville, as you are a site sponsor, I'd just like to say: Get your act together! Not cool.

But having read that the single wall baskets are finickier than the dual walls, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these for the smaller dose sizes.

20+ gram doses strike me as borderline substance abuse!

I typically might have as many as eight coffees a day, and while eight single shots are fine, but I eight double shots would be pushing it!

My wife prefers a smaller dose and for me 9g in the La Marzocco single basket works pretty well, although a P.I.T.A. to tamp....cannot perform a satisfactory tamp in the basket with 58mm tamper, find the cheapo plastic double ended OEM tamper from an older machine kinda works ok....but ended up with a budget wood and stainless ebay 51mm unit.
