Those of use who use sugar in espresso, try a teaspoon of maple syrup as an alternative, very pleasant.🙂

Since comments don't support adding attachments I've had to make a separate post for something that rightfully belongs here.

No matter how bad and overheated the coffee, it seems to do the trick when it's -30 outside.
I also seem to recall they sold a donut covered in maple syrup... and BACON!?! On the same donut. That's like having a beer and a thick shake. In the same glass.

I did use sugar a few decades ago. But took a conscious decision to reduce it over time.
Going from 1 tsp to 1/2 to 1/4.
And from white to brown to raw etc.
At this same time I was progressing from filter to espresso. well no it wasn't as cut and dried as that!
(Pls look away ....now and dont read)
For instance my first home espresso set up was.......Was ..a $39 Coles espresso special, which was a copy / knock off of the first Aldi sold machine...
And a blade brinder....ooohhhh.
(Ok you can come back now !)
Anyway a good espresso shot should have its own inherent sweetness.
You can train your palate away from sweeteners!
Edit: There is No implied direction or other inference intended by the last line above...Last edited by EspressoAdventurer; 15 July 2021, 02:11 PM.

Anyway, on the sugar thing, I'm not gonna slag anyone off for sweetening their espresso. The Italians invented espresso and they add sugar like it's crack. They have a sweet tooth in that country!
I don't normally sweeten coffee, except if its the black percolated stuff out of an urn that you get at, for example, a hotel buffet. Then I add one sugar.

Have we lost our sense of humour here? My comment was meant in jest. I didn't think I needed to point that out. It's the deliberate sweetening of coffee with foreign substances and the image of Javaphile's 30 year old coffee that have put things off kilter
The right of any CSer to drink their coffee however the hell they want has not been impinged. We don't need to launch another 'sugar in coffee ' debate.
As you were.
