  • Help with Breville Barista Express

Hi. Just wondering if anybody would have any suggestions with my breville barista express. As you can see in the video below whenever I try and pull a shot coffee spurts out the group head. I have run the cleaning and descaling cycle a number of times, I have cleaned the shower screen really well, changed the grind settings, swapped filter baskets and changed the rubber seal in the group head but to no avail. Any suggestions would be massively appreciated. Many thanks

Can't see the video however the symptoms you're describing are very common on later model machines. The bolts that hold the group collar to the group head assembly are loose, this causes the extraction pressure to force the portafilter away from the seal resulting in the leak.

To verify this, lock your portafilter into the brewing position then move it firmly up and down. On a machine with tight bolts, you will get no movement. With loose bolts, you'll usually feel an up and down movement, this can also sometimes be seen if you look at the silver part directly above the portafilter, it'll shift up and down slightly.

It's not a difficult repair but does require near complete disassembly of the machine. The bolts need to be removed, red loctite applied, then reinstalled.
Breville have acknowledged this problem so if you contact them, they may organise a warranty repair.
