Thanks very much all! Sounds like original packaging with a freight consolidator is the go - am getting very competitive quotes from them so far

    Not my experience.
They lost a new grinder on a 60km trip from one side of Melbourne to the other and were totally uncontactable by me as I was not the customer.
It then took them 6 weeks to admit that they had lost the package.
    Fkuc them.

One thing Sendle do well is own up when they screw up and damage or lose stuff. They accept and settle insurance claims rapidly. Conversely, Auspost make it near impossible to claim and then they don't pay anyway. Their insurance is close to a waste of time.

I would not trust Sendle to deliver anything, anywhere, anytime.

Agree with yochiya re sending it in the original box. From a price point of view Freight Consolidators are hard to beat. AusPost are expensive for heavy stuff especially over 25kg.

    Purely my opinion.

I reckon the standard packaging with foam and box should be good enough. It is after all how it was shipped to where it is now. Sendle was great dealing with. You book a collection online and they'll pick it up. Be sure to add your phone number as part of the instructions.

    All the best

Hi all, I also thought I would revive this thread as I have a similar (but slightly different) situation.

I'm looking to get a Gaggia Classic Pro shipped from Perth to the east coast. Have read through the advice so far, and it looks like I have a couple of things in my favour - I have the original packaging, and it is less than 25kg (~9kg boxed).

    So a couple of questions:
    1. Would you double box given I have the original packaging? Or will it be alright if I secure everything properly?
    2. Any recommendations for couriers given the lower weight compared to OP? It looks like Aus Post, Sendle, freight consolidators are all options but would love to hear others as well
Any other suggestions or experience would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Pete

So, I've been just informed today that Transdirect cannot provide me with an ETA for the delivery of my machine - at all!

This info/non-info obviously comes from the courier company, but really?!

The machine is basically sitting in a depot across town from me and they have no idea when they will have the manpower (i.e. a driver) to deliver it to me. Unbelievable.

Just check on exactly what the transit insurance covers. Andy and site sponsors will know better then me but I have a recollection of asking what the offered insurance would cover (AusPost from memory) and it was only for loss, not for damage.

    Man, this makes me nervous!

I'm still waiting to receive a Bezzera Strega I bought and that was shipped from MEL to Perth 3 weeks ago via Transdirect as an intermediary.
No word from the courier as to how and when it will arrive.

    Hi snobs,
I know this topic has been 'cold' for a bit, but I thought it better to jump on it rather than opening a new one.

Has anyone experience with transit insurance from an external provider?
I'm planning to get a machine shipped from NSW to Melb, in the original box but w/o a pallet (36'ish kg).
As far as we could see, only TNT allows shipping like this. Their shipping cost seems kind of reasonable, the insurance however almost triples the price ($136 to $394 (!!)).

=> We were wondering whether a 'transit insurance' like the one from NTI (inland transit insurance) would be an alternative. The prices for those seem to be a lot lower (e.g. around $55 w/ 75excess), but it's pretty tough to find any reviews on these.

Happy for any help / suggestions / experiences!

    Cheers, Markus

Huge huge thanks for offering Antony, this was admittedly plan B as I did not want to add more overhead and involve more parties if I could avoid it. It was a massive comfort to have the option.

I also want to say that is at least the second time you have offered me assistance, the first related to a grinder. People and businesses like you make the world a better place.

You have definitely earned me as a future customer!

I thought I'd post here for anyone interested. This was my first oversized item shipping experience.

Shipping is a pain in the butt, 2 things make it much worse. Shipping more than 25kg and not having the original box.

Less than 25kg has many simple, quick and cost effective options. Sendle seemed like the best (thanks FilthySudo ).

More than 25kg means you need to deal with the "big boys" of the shipping world. TnT, AlliedExpress or similar. The "big boys" however don't like dealing with simple peasants like us, so you have to deal with a "medium boy" like Couriers and Freight or TransDirect.

I used Couriers and Freight (thanks Andy). They allowed me to use a division of TnT used to ship Sensitive equipment like computer gear. I had to reschedule my pickup last minute, phoned many times for updates. The truck came with a tail lift and the driver did everything. I just left the 40kg pallet outside. Long story short, I'd happily use them again and recommend them to others. All in all, shipping+insurance was like $244 or so, tail lift added a bit but it was a requirement due to the weight.

I scored a 1/4 pallet at Bunnings and they were super nice about it all. I double boxed it and used about half the global supply of bubble wrap and packing foam (thanks Tom).

I spammed the new owner with photos and frequent updates. Basically what I would have liked someone provide me if I spend huge bucks after a video call. They appreciated it and the deal went really smoothly. I'm confident both of us have achieved a win win situation.

Top tip, keep your packaging and pallet if you can.

    Thanks all.

Check Allied: they do over 25kg freight and their insurance is very reasonable. 3 weeks ago I checked 35kg coffee machine freight between Mel & Perth and it was $177, including insurance.
