  • Re-grinding/double grinding coffee with two manual grinders

OK, so something similar has come up before with respect to Espresso (Regrinding Coffee - A Surprising Result - YouTube), but I've just been playing with the Aeropress and my two manual grinders at work.

Story goes: I've had a porlex tall for many years. Recently been feeling it's getting worse and worse, tried cleaning it, no real improvement. Had a look online for new burrs, found that Timemore C2 are now quite cheap (paid $70 on Aliexpress).

So I tried the C2 and it was much better. But I wasn't completely happy. When grinding, I felt it was 'catching' on occasion. Moreover, because of how the handle is attached to the lid, the lid would fall off, then some beans might fall out (I accept this could just be fixed with a bit more practice adjusting how I use my grinder, but it annoyed me).

However, I saw my Porlex just sitting there doing nothing and thought the reason it catches is because bean sizes are quite different (like pop-corning on an electric grinder). So I thought I'd just use the Porlex to pre-break up the beans. I set it up ridiculously course (it basically breaks up beans into 1/5 original size, courser than the video above). Grinding in the porlex at this setting takes about 5 seconds.

Next I put these pre-broken (think this is a more accurate term than ground) beans into my C2, ground, then brewed. Grinding was so much smoother (and faster) now in the C2, so despite using two grinders total time is probably similar (and definitely quicker than picking up beans off the floor).

Moreover, the taste was significantly better. Looked up if anyone else has done this, but only found the video above wrt espresso.

This is my new routine. Just thought I'd share, would love others to try/experiment.

So, Hoffmans video popped up in my insta feed this morning and thought id have a go. My mind is blown. At the same setting as I had used yesterday for a normal espresso pull my shot came out horrendously gushing! It tasted pretty good, but I thought I must have screwed something up, so I pulled again at an even finer setting and still gushing. then i ground the beans normally and the shot pulled way tighter and more expected.

If it didnt take around 5 minutes to grind this way, id probably do everytime. But, definitely not practical to be feeding 2-4 beans in at a time (im hand grindeing too).

    Very surprised.

My girlfriend pregrinds her beans about 4 days worth for her French press. I use aeropress and if I'm out of fresh beans, I regrind her beans and use them. I grind much finer, (almost espresso fine) with about 1min in aeropress, and the coffee turns out pretty good.

This is Maybe/Possibly/Somewhat/ like the hybrid grinders e.g. Cimbali Max (old), Grindie (new), Versalab, and Honne where conical burr set smashes the beans first and drops them into a flat burr for finessing the grind. OK, it's probably not the same, but similar in that the beans firstly get ground coarse and then finer. The benefit of these hybrid machines is that there is less time between the first grind and the espresso getting into the cup. I guess.

The Kafatek MC4 has dual conical burrs, and there's at least 2 hand grinders with dual conical burr sets as well. None of them cheap though, understandably.
      Working...
