  • Coffee Cabinet/ Buffet

    Hey guys,

So I'm in a bit of a pickle. I know everyone here is great when it comes to advice with machines, roasting, and I guess all things coffee (duh)... But I didn't realise just how hard it is to find a cabinet that will work with my setup that I'm trying to organise.

I have a lever machine on its way in the weeks to come and am realistically looking for a buffet that is at least deep enough to fit it (~45cm or more is best), but also want to fit the grinder, roaster and an 'in buffet' knockbox too...

I'm guessing most will have their gear on the kitchen counter, but those who have set up other coffee stations, what have you done, or found that works best?

Also worth noting that I'm trying to find something with cabinets (not drawers) as I plan to run the machine off a 20L bottle and flojet pump...

Thanks in advance for any recommendations you may be able to provide!

Mate, I recommend searching FB marketplace or similar for sideboards that fit your desired decor and dimensions.
I am in the middle of up-sizing from a 1.4 mtr long one to a 2 mtr long one.
The first cost me $200 the second $250 both solid pine.
There are all sorts of sideboards/cabinets out there for cheap.

i ended up purchasing kitchen cabinets and a nice timber top all from ikea. Cutout all the holes for the machine, power cables, and openings for knock box and jug rinser. All plumbing nicely hidden underneath. Beauty is you can go just about any length you like but depth is standard kitchen of around 630mm

This looks very neat & elegant!

I like the copper coloured portafilter 'station' as well. I hadn't seen that colour before. Is there a reason you use it in addition to your tamping mats, or is it a matter of what portafilter you use?

lienemann, i purchased it to use instead of the mats, but found that my pesado protafilters where too heavy on the handle end and wouldnt sit there, but would want to fall off. So i sold it and stuck with the mats. Though now that i use the puqpress i really dont need either anymore

JohnA , true. I completely overlooked the PuqPress. I never quite liked those plasticky mats; that's why I wondered about the stand.

Bror? It’s all open though, but deep enough.

Yes indeed. It's designed to be a kitchen island with shelves on one side. I put commercial castors on it (rated 400kg load) so it will take the heaviest of machines and still be able to be easily and securely moved for cleaning or for access to power points/plug/smart-timers.

keep in mind that the benchspace of your sideboard might stain if its not a benchtop like some of these examples or bubble if its a fibreboard or something that wasnt supposed to get wet. so unless you are very routine in your cleaning you might want to consider putting something underneath the machine and grinder. im lazy so i use silicone baking mats, other ppl have used nice timber presentation boards and theres also stainless steel coffee drawers like ones frequently used by silvia/rocky combos.

I initially had my Alex leva on an Ikea trolley, but found it was pretty easy to tip the whole thing when pulling the lever. A solid timber buffet with cabinet doors would probably be heavy enough to stay planted, but I'd want to have anything freestanding anchored to the floor or wall if possible.

Impressive how small the castors are for 400kg load

So this is obviously the larger one of the two sizes that the Bror benches come in, right?
The shorter version already comes with castors, albeit only rated to 60 kilos, I believe.

            It's not a Bror sorry it's a TORNVIKEN island

Definitely go for a solid wood, large buffet if you have the space. The longer the better. Drawers are very handy for storing jugs, portafilters, baskets, tools etc. To protect the benchtop, we bought some clear vinyl cut from a roll from Clark Rubber. You can't tell it's there it's so clear. And cheap too.

If you go with solid wood and prefer a natural finish, use pure tung oil and cut the first coats with euky for penetration. If done properly it will take anything a coffee machine can dish out for years.

It doesn't like caustic or paintstripper but it will cope with almost anything else.

brewme I had an Izzo Valexiaset up on the above island with the flojet and 20L bottle in the cavity at the rear on the wall side of the island out of site. It worked very well and was 100% stable despite the weight. Old pic uploaded.

This looks really promising! The setup will be a Nurri Leva, EG1 and I'm trying to see if I can fit the Ailio on too..... Thanks so much, this shot really helps

Everything i've seen on IKEA is for the open BROR system, you wouldnt happen to have a link to this one in particular would you Tom?

Sorry I did not see your question earlier.

The cart from Ikea is a "TORNVIKEN island".

Then from the Decent Espresso website i bought the set of "IKEA Bror wheel bracket set of 4" and "Set of 18 M6 bolts for IKEA BROR Table".

I then bought a set of industrial castors for the wheels rated at 300kg load capacity.

I wanted heavy duty wheels because it's amazing how often I wheel it out to clean or change power cables and I wanted to have absolute confidence that it would support a 50kg lever machine (or two).

I have a Nurri on pre order too ... yay for us!

Nice one! Ended up picking up a second hand island on marketplace. Cut into it for the knockbox and scales. Reckon it turned out well!

Hmm... just recalled you have a Nurri to come? Time to get out the measuring tape! (Same challenge here).

            • #13
Haha yeah, measured it all out. 45cm deep and 36 wide from memory, so it will just sit behind the scale and knock box. I'll move the Behmor
