  • Hubby has decided he likes coffee.

So hubby has always been interested in my coffee thing but he hates coffee. He loves the machines and the smell of coffee but has always said he hates the taste of coffee.
He has always "needed a caffeine hit" and drank way more coke then anyone should but he pretty much gave that up a couple of years ago.
Anyway the last few days he has been saying I should make him a coffee on the weekend as he wants to try it again. He always said he didn't like "the stuff" so I didn't really take him that seriously.
Well I just fired up the machine and out of his workshop he comes and asked me to make him one. I figured he would want milk but no, he wanted a double espresso, I couldn't believe it.
So I made it for him expecting him to spit it out or screw up his face but to my absolute shock he downed that baby in seconds and proclaimed " that actually tastes like coffee smells" followed by "can you make me another one later on"?
He also said he thinks it must have been the milk that made him decide years ago that he didn't like coffee.

After 30 odd years of saying he hates the taste of coffee he loved my espresso, I am beyond shocked.

That sounds like a pretty solid compliment for both you and the coffee!

IMHO that is one of the greatest compliments a barista can hear so a massive congrats. And of course "can you make me another one?".

Is there a dilemma for you now? As in, do I teach him how to make espresso and risk him taking it over like the remote control OR do I become his personal barista?

It certainly was not thinking that was how thinks would go, I really thought it would end up in the sink or maybe drowned in milk.

Who knows where things will go from here, maybe small steps lol

I do like messing around with coffee so for now, I will stick with it.

We've had round two and it went down equally as well as the first.

Wish I could turn my partner to the caffeination side, she loves the smell of fresh roasted and ground beans but can’t stand the taste. She has tried it with different milks including nut milks as she’s lactose intolerant and nope! It’s just the bitter and strong flavours of it that she sticks her nose up at. I wish I could have a convert so then all my coffee purchases could be justified or easily purchased otherwise!

My SO will never come over to the dark side.
She is a dedicated tea drinker.
On the other hand she has no problems with me buying any sort of tools including coffee related ones and I have no problems with her buying cows and bulls.

Yep, she’s a tea drinker also. And haha, I’m the spender one the house and she’s the tightass, so I don’t get away with things as easy

He was always the same. He had a couple of coffees in his teens, didn't like it so didn't bother again. Over the years I have tried to get him to drink it because he loves the smell and being an engineer the machines are right up his alley but I always got "can't stand the stuff" and off he would go to slug down a coke so this is no small thing lol.

I actually stopped drinking coffee for around 12 months or so because I became addicted to Earl and Lady Grey tea. I've probably only been drinking it again for 4 or 5 months.

Hmmm, you must have a crystal ball, we've already got a Europiccola lol

tompoland do you too have a crystal ball? I have been in the market for an upgrade for the last four months or so but keep flip flopping on what I want, I don't actually think I know but it looks like we are upping the budget somewhat so we shall see what we end up with.
No, machine is not an Aldi job lol.

IrisGanache what style of espresso do you like e.g. light / medium / dark? Adding milk?

Upgrade are always a fun adventure.

      Hi,
It's kind of a mixed bag around here. I have two lattes a day and now hubby is drinking espresso I join him in the afternoon for one.
My oldest is at work during the week so he will generally have a couple of lattes each day on the weekends.
Trying to gauge hubbies consumption I am thinking probably just one double espresso a day on work days and at least two on the days he is home, possibly three.

I roast my own beans and aim for a medium bean.

Upgrade wise I have been researching everything that grabs me but hubby seems intent on upping the budget and buying something we won't want to upgrade in a few years.
I currently have a Unico Splendor, which I love, and a Europiccola, that I also love.
I have looked at Bianca, Eagle One Prima, Cremina, Synchronika, Profi 700, Linea Mini and I am sure there are more in there.

Always great to gain a convert Iris, even better when it's your soul mate, another common interest.😉
PS, the Splendor has an excellent reputation, why upgrade to a machine that probably won't provide better results?🤔

Ha, it's probably about the only interest in common.

I think I am ready to move things up a notch, try something different. The Unico is going anywhere, well not until the oldest decides to move out anyway, which probably won't be any time soon.

Awesome story. I love conversions to the dark side.

For machines, if upgrading I would look at the Synchronika.
The quality fit & finish will satisfy the engineer (I was a mechanical engineer) and you can upgrade the machine with a flow control u it at some point in the future.

I think it has been a bit of a revelation, both for him and I.

The Synchronika with flow control is one we have been looking at.
I really like the look of it but I am not going to rush things, It's not as if I don't have capable equipment and I have made the mistake before of rushing in and not getting what I really wanted only to fork out the money a month later for what I wanted in the first place.

I just wanted to add I didn't think a couple of extra cuppas a day would make a difference but I feel like I am roasting a lot more than I was.

It is something about us that continue to surprise our Wives even after 30+ years. I cooked Chicken Parmigiana last night for the first time and got rave reviews from better half.
My wife surprises me every day, even after 30+ years.
    Cheers
