  • Best brand of Coffee Concentrate?

    Hi all, first post here

I never drank coffee at all for a long time, then my mum got a pod machine. Then I upgraded to learning about coffee with a Breville Barista Touch, I pulled at least 1000 shots through that. When I broke up with my girlfriend, we didn't have kids so I gave her custody of the coffee machine because I'm a nice guy.

During a bout of COVID I learnt about how grinders are so important so I ordered a Eureka Mignon Specialita which is an amazing grinder, and just a little second hand Breville Bambino I found on marketplace.

Anyway, reason I am here to ask advice, is that I am in charge of regularly organising events at work, for 130 people. We've done buffets in the past, but next event is a guy coming to make dutch pancakes. The other guy who is in charge wanted to organise a mobile barista, but I started looking into cold brew and ways we could reduce our costs.

I see there is a Toddy commercial system, where I can make my own cold brew, but this is too time intensive at work, and no one else would care enough to assist me.

I also found this amazing device called Hard Tank and Baby Hard Tank.

But in the meantime, I think concentrate is the way to go. We have hot and cold water dispensers, ice machines and 30 litres of milk delivered weekly already.

I am confused though, some companies say 30ml shots, some say 50ml shots.

Any recommendations between the brands? There is Mr. Bean in 500ml, Soul Origin is cheap at $35 for 2 litres of 30ml shots so 4 litres ($70) would be enough for an event. Also First Press here in Melbourne, Glitch in Newcastle and many more.

Also for cans of nitro coffee, I guess the canning process and distribution makes this much more expensive than concentrate. Cheapest I can find is 9x12=108 cans for $357.

    Thanks for reading!

    No, just NO.
    Listen to the other guy.
If I were invited to a function with this supplied I would be very disappointed and possibly, slap someone.

And there is the crux of the issue - you are on a hiding to nothing here, and none of the lazy buggers will thank you for trying to save a few dollars. Take the no-risk option and use a barista. Then everyone is happy. . . maybe.

Anyway, what do these commercial concentrates taste like, I've never tried them? I occasionally make my own 'travel concentrate' by pulling about 15 double shots into an ice cube tray, adding a teaspoon of sugar to each 'cube' and freezing them. For short trips, the cubes are OK. Brings a whole new meaning to the saying 'one lump or two'.

Just imagine how well a wine concentrate would work and extrapolate from there.

Don't worry, it has been tried.

Hmmm, OK. Well It's a shame I haven't got any positive feedback.

I was in Jakarta a few months ago, and I went to this cafe called 1/15 Menteng which is one of the best coffee shops in the city.

I had this drink they are famous for called Rojali: cold drip, soda, lime and ice and I loved it:

Looks delicious and likely very tasty in hot weather but to be fair to the other posters, this website is called coffeesnobs with good reason (and I say that with all the fervor of a recent convert haha)

Looks like a great drink but not sure what it has to do with your question? Cold drip is not coffee concentrate.

Just get work to buy a Ground Control machine and it'll do pretty much everything for you

              A few questions.
Are there going to be 120 attendees?
              Are the pancakes Poffertjes?
Do all the employees work at the same worksite or multiple worksites and what coffee do they drink there?
Even if the mobile barista can knock out 2 coffees a minute it will take an hour for everyone to get a coffee.
Is this meant to be a pleasant, bonding type of work function or something one must attend to please the boss?

There is a reason commercial caterers exist and why they cost money.
Events like this are a tax write off for businesses so why cut corners?

There are 130 attendees. But we all have different meal break times as people come in off the road, or start PM shifts. 30 people won't even be there and have to grab food/drinks arranged in the fridge for them. So a mobile barista would have time to make them if we wanted.

We have had pleasant work functions but they are more buffet type, with a presentation for long service, we just had one a few weeks ago and it cost $3800 for catering, so this next event is just an "in-between" function.

                The pancakes yes, are Poffertjes.

People are all at the same worksite but not everyone even drinks coffee,

But I can throw that money from a Barista at something else, like a new microwave or TV.

It's not a tax write off, it's an amenities fund where all employees contribute weekly from their payslip.

Ok the pancakes should work.(Save some for me )
I suppose there is no chance of getting the employer to chuck in for the coffee.
I guess I'd send out an email/message asking folks what they think of the options.
Instant plus a new microwave or barista coffee for the gig.
                  Good luck.

In the same scenario, I would look at drip/filter coffee. If you feed it good beans the results are great and it will handle the volume with minimal staff.

You could buy 10 Behmor Brazen Brewers and produce 50 coffees every 10 minutes, 300 coffees per hour!
(which is what the below Golden Bean Setup was)

1 Litre of coffee every 10 minutes per brewer = 5 x 8oz cups (with enough room for a splash of milk). The insulated carafes hold it hot for more than half an hour so you could start brewing earlier than needed to have the volume ready. With some extra carafes and 3 Brazens you could do near 50 coffees in half an hour.

I also own a couple of airpot brewers and half a dozen airpots. Which can produce a large amount of coffee in a short time and have been used for many competitions including the Australian Cup Tasting Championships.

These are getting hard to find in AU voltage but will still be available and the Airpots are readily available locally still.
(picture is an example, ignore the brand, they all come out of the same factory I expect)

You simply can't beat good filter coffee for a crowd.
