Oh I should ask - what were your favourites from the BOP tasting? Did you taste anything particularly good at MICE?

Curious as to how the roasting and cupping of the two BoP lots were that you got?
Hiya, there are always too many people to meet at these things! Hope you had fun and enjoyed Rao's course, too.

I posted about this on my instagram, but, in essence, Geisha Washed #10 was so good that I immediately circled over to Gavin and grabbed all of the leftovers they had of it to share with a few people. On instagram, I reported on re-cupping that with some friends at calere. GW#3 was Elida green tip washed, which has had super long aftertaste that I can remember since about 2018. It still had that, but the aromas weren't that complex and were a bit muddy.

Great event. Good to benchmark to the upper echelons. Every man and his dog seems to feel pressure to "me too" and throw some expensive coffee on their menu, and they often only really seem to care that they can use the word "geisha" on the label, since the industry has beat people over the head with "geisha" = "premium". And many of them, are quite good, but many are poorly roasted or the coffee, frankly, just isn't as aromatic and distinct as it should be. So these benchmarkings are always good fun.

JohnA I went on friday. A few hours is all I need of it, so overstimulating!
I drank a lot of tasty coffee and ate no lunch.
I just wandered really, not so interested in the WBC.
    Some highlights:
-The Varia grinder looks interesting and I'll look forward to hands on review of it. It should have a really good price point, but there may be quality sacrifices in the production of it to keep costs down. Only 38mm burrs. It was on the Bombora stand along with a LOT of the equipment they stock.
-The Specht/Weber stand was super cool. It was nice to get hands on with a Key as I've heard a lot of negative reviews of it, but was easy to use and espresso tasted great, and it was a light roasted coffee. Specht is supposedly selling the Unifilter now , great for getting local shipping prices.
-Some massive stalls there - Ona, Zest, St Ali, just put in massive efforts creating really cool stalls with a lot of people working there and serving coffee.
-I discovered the Tricolate is made in Adelaide.
-I got to speak with Scott Rao and Lance Hedrick at Scott's roasting class, that was cool!
-I attended the Best of Panama cupping at Proud Mary, close to the highlight for me, really delicious coffees, memorable. There were 30 coffees on tasting which was too many for my pallet. They will not be cheap let me tell you!
-The Synesso ES-1 was there to play with, omg!
-The baristas were using Riverina 'Gold' milk if anyone is interested to know.
-Most will already know this, the winner of the WBC used a new comb-style distribution tool being made by Barista Hustle and is soon to be released. Expect to see a bunch of wedges being sold 2nd hand when that's released.
-EQMR had a stall an they have a roast defect tasting kit which some snobs might be interested in for learning.

I was hoping to see the new Aillio there but it wasn't in the show. Bit of a shame.

Overall, super impressed with the massive effort of getting it all setup. I can't imagine how long bump in would have taken, the roaster manufacturers literally had their rosters there, Giesen had their full lineup.

Had an equally brilliant day on the Friday. I did not expect to be at MICE from morning until stumps, but there we were

Also caught some of the brewers cup and wbc sessions and was there in the stands like a fanboy when the cheer went up for the barista champion of the year. A supercharged note to end a wickedly good day out.

Well I have had just the most ballistically great time over about 5 days of MICE and coffee.

    1. Caught up with and met many COFFEE PRODUCERS who made the trip to visit us. When do you get to spend time with coffee producers without spending lots of time and money on travel?!
    2. Tasted a billion different coffees, many with the aforementioned producers.
    3. A bunch of interesting presentations.
    4. Rao roasting workshop, crucially including tasting another roast defect kit.
    5. Best of Panama cupping and SAK espresso at Proud Mary.
    6. Crashed competitor prep sessions.
    7. So, so many meals, cuppings and hang outs with so, so many weird, wonderful and so very different people from all walks of the coffee industry.

Avoided almost all espresso and competition, but delightful to see us get a win; lovely people at Axil.

I don't know how future MICE without the world coffee events will really compare. For me, the draw card was really Panama turning up, and I can't imagine there will be so many producers without the WCE.

Some thoughts and ramblings from a first time attendee.

Firstly, as an overall impression , I give a full thumbs up to the exhibitors, organisers and on the ground personnel.

    My highlights from Thursday.

Seeing some of the semifinal competitors in WBC2022.

Sam and Luke presentation in the ONA onclave, about coffee culture .. (or a sub set in that realm)
The soon to be released kaffelogic on steroids -LINK -

Density of beans and roasting discussions
tasting a Panel of Panama Coffees at St Ali stand _ having access to an origin farm worker from represented coffees.

Seeing the insides of a slayer ( and not being the cause to having to open it up)

Too much coffee was consumed, but well worthwhile
