Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
Thanks Linda, but I was saying that if the patties werent precooked THEN it would take 10 minutes to fill orders. For the record, I do eat McDonalds on occasion, and was by no means knocking them, simply correcting someones assumption that burgers were cooked to order. In fact very little cafe or restaurant food is completely cooked to order - there is almost always some degree of preparation done in advance.

Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
10 minutes?.....uhm...no.Originally posted by Viviane link=1226098580/20#20 date=1226129189Hate to break it to you, but McDonalds "makes" burgers to order, they dont mention cooking in their ads. This is because the patties are cooked in advance and held until the orders come in. Then the burger is "made" using a precooked patty and presliced salad. Otherwise youd be waiting around 10 minutes for your order, and that is unacceptable to most Maccas customers.
I will correct you here. The most time you will wait for an order is 2 minutes.
The meat is precooked, and this only is in holding for a small amount of time. Maccas now have a policy of "cook less more often" therefore suppling the customer with a fresh product. There is no longer the "production bin" where the burgers were made and left for awhile.
Anyway, back on topic.

Hey MacDonalds cooks to order now, that makes it real food. And it taste better too, just look at the happy faces on the customers waiting for the not so fast anymore swill.
I thought I was incapable of drinking instant, and hadnt had any for a couple of years, including two hospital stays. Then I moved house. The machines were transported and parked on their new bench, I knew where the coffee and paraphernalia were, there was only one hitch. The electricity company hadnt connected the power, and were unable to do so until the next day. So no coffee that day. Got to work the following day and was faced with another day of drinking tea (no disrespect to tea drinkers intended) and a day long staff meeting. So I headed for the instant. It was ugly, but it was caffeine. I suspect that it will be a long time before I drink instant again, but that day it wasnt a hard choice.

Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
Sounds like my old job where we had a full auto machine which made flavoured brown as I used to call it, being the only coffee snob in the office got me quite a reputation through the whole company... Always going to the tea room with plunger and beans in hand (ground at home that morning, so not perfect I know) to make a nice coffee that at least tasted like coffee
Poor plunger has now been relegated to the cupboard, cant bear to sell it as it was my first foray into coffee snobbing

Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
I am sure there is a Scottish sheep joke here somewhere ;D I struggled to get a really good coffee in NZ last time I was there so I settled for the beer instead
Still recommend you have a look at the Aeropress as they go on top of the cup you are drinking from and give a good strong black coffee. Not an espresso shot but not bad. The other good thing is that no one will knock it off as it looks like a few bits of Tupperware

Does drinking milk coffee mask the properties of espresso?
Someone name me "good" coffee in Dunedin, New Zealand please

Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
Oh No! Now youve gone and done it. You called it real coffee! Doesnt the smell of burning pitch and the chanting give you any sort of hint?
Next time you are somewhere with a really good coffee shop (NZ snobs help out here), take your $4.00 and get a point of comparison. Good instant is ok but it just doesnt stack up with freshly ground freshly roasted coffee.

Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
Ok Moccona is what I buy. And for right or wrong reasons, I actually dont mind the taste.
Better laboratories maybe?
And I watched a program on TV about how they make instant coffee. Pretty much dehydrated coffee brew right? So yes you lose in the process but it is in essence "real coffee" right? Perhaps not to snobs

Have an extra one at home before you go, or buy some takeaway cups, or a good thermos.
If you reheat a home coffee, its better than instant. The thermos will keep it warm for quite a while though.

Re: Instant Coffee - taboo topic?
I sometimes grind some coffee in the morning to take to work and make it in a one mug plunger. I only take one shot though because Im not prepared to waste it if I dont have time.
After that I just resort to Moccona but like Greg I dont think of it as coffee, its just another drink like tea or cola.
Since I have been drinking fresh ground coffee I have gone off sugar but still sometimes need a little with instant. I put the milk in before the hot water and it works slightly better.
